49 Avery fine 18th Century French serpentine mahogany commode, with strapwork marquetry to the top and sides inlaid with amboyna, ebony and rosewood, the solid brass bound ogee moulded top above three graduated serpentine drawers applied with fine ormolu cartouche escutcheons and bold drop handles and mounts on a plinth base and bracket feet with ormolu mounts. The original circa 1770 was purchased by the 5th Earl Spencer, known as ' The Red Earl', from the London firm of Edwards & Roberts in 1865 for £ 9 and is seen above in the Ante Room.
