Whether you are the outdoortype or shopaholic, you'll find more than enough to keep you entertained.Choose from remote wilderness, monster roller coasters, culturallysignificant landmarks, intriguing exhibitions, or endangered animals. Youwon't be disappointed. The Great Open RoadDriving in California is very easy and a wonderful way to enjoy the breathtakingscenery. There are certain cities that you will not need a car to get around and thereare some whereby it is very necessary. In our opinion, you will not need to take a carin San Francisco. Being a very walk-able city it has good public transportation thatprovides easy access from the Wharf to downtown. Besides this, most hotels in SanFrancisco will charge a parking fee locally so you are better off having a transfer onarrival and taking the city in at your own pace while getting over the jet lag. On the other end of the scale, Los Angeles is a city that is very spread out and youwould ultimately enjoy the freedom that a car can provide for easy access from thebeach areas, to shopping, to Disneyland.Driving TipsHere are some traveling tips. Highway 1 - Pacific Coast Highway - PCH - all are thesame road. Highway 101 meets Highway 1 at some points (ie San Luis Obispo and SantaBarbara) so make sure you browse over your map before checking out from your hotel. If you are driving between San Francisco and Los Angeles, our recommendation is totake PCH ( Highway 1) for the stunning coastal scenery. Endeavor to start a Californiaholiday from San Francisco and travel south. When leaving the city you are driving onthe ocean side of the road and down the coast whereas driving in the oppositedirection you are obviously heading North and the view is across the road whereoncoming traffic can obstruct of your views. This drive takes approximately 8 hours on the Highway 1. If you are in a hurry analternative road would be Highway 101. But why miss the stunning coastline scenery. Stopinto the Aquarium in Monterey or Nepenthe Indian Art Gallery in Big Sur for a cup of tea. Why not consider stopping off at one of the following areas:-San Simeonlocated just below Big Sur is the home of Hearst Castle. A 5 minutejourney will put you in the rustic cozy town of Cambria. The Best place to overnight isthe Best Western Cavalier Ocean Front. Californiahas many old Spanish Missions all down its coast. San Luis Obispo andSanta Barbara hosts some of the most beautiful missions with lovely gardens andwalks. In San Luis Obispo you can wander down Higuera Ave for some shopping orexperience their farmers market (on Thursdays) where you can taste some homemadechili and barbequed ribs cooked right on the street. Santa Barbara is the most desirable location for California natives. TV stars drive hoursdaily to live in this paradise. Besides the stunning Mission, it has one of the finest beachesin California as well as top class shopping on State Street. You must try one of theamazing Mexican restaurants for their Margaritas and chips and salsa (all you can eat).Because the mountains meet the sea Between San Francisco and Los Angeles, accommodations available can be limited during certain times of the year. Thereforewe do recommend pre-booking your accommodation in advance where possible.
