False From Medieval times to the 19th century, the bed, essentially a practical piece of furniture, became the symbol of a household’s wealth. The familiar four-poster of Elizabethan times consisted of the bed frame itself, the bedhead, the canopyor tester and two columns, usually made from oak. With its bedhead panelled and embellished with richly carved inlays, and with bulbous columns. This was one of the most treasured pieces of furniture in the household, bequeathed from heir to heir.
