Our standards are among the highest in the world, but manyothercountries still have a long way to go to bring their transport,properties and services up to the level you normally take forgranted. This applies to many European resorts. We are working toraise safety standards overseas and will of course do our best toensure that your holiday is safe and trouble-free, but we do askthat you take extra care while you are away. Therefore, please readthis information carefully.Railings, balustrades & unprotected dropsIf you are travelling with young children, make sure they are neverleft unsupervised around balconies, railings and unprotected drops.Do not allow them to climb on these, and keep furniture awayfrom the railings so that they are not encouraged to climb up.Although we check safety in all our parcs, please advise themanager or our Representative straight away if you see anyrailingsor balustrades in disrepair or any unprotected drops.Glass panelsFew buildings are legally obliged to install "toughened" or safetyglass in their windows, doors and glass cabinets, etc. Please takecare when walking through patio doorways as it can be difficult tospot if they are closed in bright sunlight, and draw the particularattention of any children travelling with you to this danger.Although identifying stickers should be in place on balcony doorsand other large glass doors, this may not always be the case soplease take care.Fire safetyDifferent countries have different fire safety regulations andprocedures. Please read carefully all fire safety information availablein your mobile home. If staying overnight in a hotel, please makesure you familiarise yourself with the location of the fire exitnearest to your bedroom.Please take care when discarding matches and cigarettes, etc.Always use the ashtrays provided. Never throw a cigarette endaway carelessly, especially near trees or plants. We ask you not tosmoke inside Crystal Al Fresco accommodation as all our holidayhomes are no smoking.Swimming poolsYou will find that most parcs abroad do not provide a lifeguard. Youtherefore need to adopt a sensible attitude around the pool andmake sure that children are supervised at all times. Diving is notadvised at any of our parcs and furthermore most pools carry clear"No Diving" messages. Take care when walking around the pool, aspool surrounds are often slippery when wet. You should not enterthe pool after drinking alcohol. Here are some tips to ensure safety at all times when using theswimming pool:. Always check the pool design and layout before getting in.. Check your height in relation to the pool depth (metric).. Find out where deep and shallow areas are, plus any slopes.. Check for any "hidden" obstacles in the water (rocks and ledges).. Never dive from the poolside into less than 1.5m of water andnever dive from bridges, rocks, or other decorative features.. Check to see if the pool has a lifeguard in attendance. . Do not use the pool if you cannot see the bottom.. Swim before eating and drinking, not immediately after.. Check what to do in an emergency. If it is not stated, ask.. Always supervise children.. Do not swim at night (or when the pool is closed).. Remember to always use adequate protection against thesun'srays.. Use steps provided for entering/exiting pool.. Some campsites may require you to wear swimming caps in theirpool for hygiene purposes.. In Europe it is common practice to shower before usingswimming pools.. Due to hygiene regulations, many parc owners have bannedswim shorts, and require bathing caps to be worn. Please takeconventional lycra-style trim swimwear. Both can usually bepurchased locally.If using pool slides, please take extra care:. Go down one person at a time. Go down feet first. Always check the landing area is clear before descending'Sea/beaches/lakesPlaying and swimming in the sea can be great fun. At timeshowever, especially during rough conditions, dangerous currentsmay be present. We therefore recommend that you follow theflagwarning signals available on most beaches and swim in thedesignated areas. Should these not be in place, please consult yourRepresentative who will be able to provide full details. Be especiallycareful if you have small children. Here are a few tips:. Familiarise yourself with the local flag warning system. Seek local advice on the safest beaches.. Check to see if the beach has lifeguards in attendance.. Swim parallel to the shore, within your depth.. Be aware of local conditions (e.g. tides, winds, currents) -seekadvice.. Supervise children at all times.. Swim before eating and drinking, not immediately after.. Beware of any "zones" for powerboats, jet ski's etc.GasIf your accommodation has a gas cooker, always double check thatit has been turned off properly just as you would at home andfollow any Gas Safety Instructions. In many cases you will find thatthe gas is supplied direct from a bottle. Seek the help of yourRepresentative if you have any concerns about gas.Children's safetyThe safety of our younger guests is our biggest concern. Given thenatural curiosity of children on holiday, you will probably need tobe more aware of what they are up to. Remember that youngchildren should never be left unsupervised, particularly whenaround the swimming pool, at the beach, near drops, or near lifts.Make sure that your children always know where you will be andstress to them the importance of staying close by.Children's playgroundsIf there is a children's playground at your holiday parc, your childrenwill need to be supervised there at all times by a parent/guardian.Personal safetyPlease take care of your valuables at all times, particularly whenout and about in the resort. Most holiday destinations have theirshare of pickpockets, who would be keen to help themselves toyour handbags, cameras etc., if given the opportunity. Tourists areoften seen as an easy target and it therefore makes sense to takesimple precautions to safeguard your belongings.. Leave your valuables, in particular expensive jewellery at home. Beware of pickpockets and bag snatchers; carry your handbagfirmly under your arm.. Never advertise the fact that you are a holidaymaker. Trynottoconsult maps in open view as this attracts attention.. Keep your travellers' cheques and cheque guarantee cardseparate and only carry the amount of cash that you need.. Do not walk alone at night in narrow dark areas, but keep towelllit, busy areas.. Leave nothing of value in parked cars.. Where possible take traveller's cheques instead of cash - if youlose them, they can be replaced. . Remember to lock your door at night and when you go outduring the day, just as you would at home.Upset stomachsThe tap water in many overseas destinations has a higher mineralcontent than we are used to in the UK, so it may be salty to tasteand can upset your stomach. For this reason, we would alwaysrecommend that you drink bottled water and avoid ice in drinks,unless your Representative advises you otherwise. If you arevisiting a hot country, it is important to drink plenty of watertoavoid the effect of dehydration. Always ensure that food isproperly cooked and properly chilled and that salads and unpeeledfruits have been thoroughly washed.Sun loungers/deck chairsWhen using sun loungers/deck chairs, please ensure that theyareproperly set up before use. Please also avoid placing sunloungers/deck chairs near to perimeter walls as children couldusethem to climb over walls.Electrical appliances Please remember that it is dangerous to use electrical applianceswhen wearing a wet bathing costume or with bare feet on wetfloors. For your own safety, please exercise proper caution whenhandling electrical appliances and supervise closely any childrenwho are doing so. Please report any electrical defects to yourRepresentative.MopedsDue to varying road conditions overseas, we do not recommendmoped or scooter hire. Your Representative will not be able tomake reservations on your behalf.SunbathingA healthy colour makes us all feel better, but taking too much suncan be both painful and dangerous. Build up your tan gradually byminimising your exposure during the first few days of your holiday.Always cover yourself with a high factor sunscreen lotion offeringgood protection. Never stay in the sun until your skin goes red asthe damage will have already been done. Take particular care withchildren who should always use sunscreen of at least factor 15.Very young children should use an even higher sunscreen or totalblock and cover up with a sun hat and loose cotton clothing. Remember the sun's rays are at their strongest between thehours of 11.00 and 15.00.. Always use a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB(ultra violet) and has a high SPF (sun protection factor).. Avoid the midday sun, but if you have to go out, cover up withloose clothing and wear a wide brimmed hat.. Never expose babies under six months to direct sunlight.. Always protect your eyes from the sun with a good pair ofsunglasses; check the label for British Standard BS EN 1836:1997 orIrish equivalent.. Remember you can still burn in the shade, when it's cloudy orwhen you're swimming. Wind and water intensify the sun's effect,so while you may feel cool, you could be burning.. Where possible, seek natural shade.If you do burn;. Get out of the sun, cover up in loose, light clothing.. If there's any sign of infection, seek medical advice.Or get heat stroke;. Drink plenty of water, as this will combat the dehydration, whichis responsible for the sick feeling and dizziness associated withheat stroke. Avoid alcohol because it will dehydrate you further.AlcoholSome of us like to indulge, especially during our holidays, butthereare times when alcohol is best avoided. Do not drink beforeswimming in the pool or in the sea and try to avoid drinking whensun bathing as this will dehydrate you. Never drink if hiring a car asdrink-driving laws exist in most countries.AnimalsThe hygiene and care of animals overseas varies enormouslybetween countries. We suggest that you do not feed or play withanimals, domestic or wild, and ensure that children are not allowedto do so. If you are bitten or scratched, please report this to yourRepresentative and seek assistance immediately.Scuba DivingYou must be in a reasonable state of health to scuba dive. Your finaldive must be completed at least 24 hours before your flight home.Flying within 24 hours of scuba diving is extremely dangerous dueto the pressurisation of the aircraft cabin. Please also check thatyour insurance policy covers you adequately for this activity.Excursions & activitiesPart of the fun of a holiday is having the opportunity to take partin a wide range of activities, some of which you may not have triedbefore. Whilst we are confident that you will enjoy taking part inmany new and exciting activities we must ask you to ensure thatyou are reasonably fit and that you comply with all safetyinstructions.Deep Vein ThrombosisIt is known that any long periods of immobility, such as sittingupright in one position for long periods of time and wearing tightfitting clothing can contribute to the condition of deep veinthrombosis (DVT). Muscles can become constricted and the returnof blood from the legs to the heart is inhibited. Symptomscanbemuscular and backaches, excess fatigue or in very rarecircumstances, more serious complications can occur, even afteryour journey has ended.Therefore, we recommend you follow this simple advice:. Drink plenty of fluids but not alcohol or caffeine as they candehydrate you.. Get up and move around during your flight.. When sitting down, do some simple stretching exercises regularlythroughout your flight, such as raising your legs, one at a time,rotating your ankles, flexing your calf muscles, rotating yourshoulders and moving your head from side to side.We strongly recommend that you seek medical advice from yourdoctor before you travel if you have any concerns regarding yourhealth, DVT or if you are in any of the following categories; if youare pregnant, have had recent surgery, have a family history ofDVT, are receiving hormone treatment, have had previous DVT, area cancer patient, have abnormalities of blood clotting, have hadrecent trauma involving the lower limbs or have varicose veins.Health advice & emergency informationPlease consult your GP or local travel clinic for specific informationregarding health risks and protection required for your chosendestination. Also, please allow sufficient time prior to yourdeparture to complete any courses of medication needed.As a UK resident, you're entitled to free, or reduced cost, statehealthcare when you visit a European Union (EU) country - butonly if you have a new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)with you. You can apply for an EHIC, free of charge, by, by calling 0845 606 2030, or by picking up aleaflet from the post office. The EHIC card supersedes theprevious E111 form, which ceases to be valid from the 31stDecember 2005. The EHIC is normally valid for three to five yearsand covers any medical treatment that becomes necessary duringyour trip, because of either illness or an accident.
