Full details and further itineraries are shown on our website however here are some of the highlights for our 10 day tour which circumnavigates the island.Dettifoss Europe's most powerful waterfall, is still eroding its dramatic 20km gorge.Myvatn Explore Lake Myvatn and its surrounds, one of Iceland's most remarkable regions, for its diversity of volcanic features and its natural beauty, varied flora and birdlife. See moon-like pseudocraters, giant lava pillars set amongst a labyrinth of caves and an explosion crater over 1km in diameter, plus many other fascinating features.Nature BathsAt the end of the day, take a soak in the warm waters of the 'Blue Lagoon of the north'.Whale Watching Visit Husavik, an attractive fishing town on Skjalfandi Bay, which has developed a thriving tourism industry based around whale watching. A visit to the Whale Museum is recommended, naturally followed by a whale watching trip!East Fjords Drive through the stunning East Fjords and see how Ice Age glaciers have scoured U-shaped and hanging valleys, whose sides are stepped with layer upon layer of tertiary basalt lavas, intersected by dykes. In Breiddalur, the glaciers cut through one of the ancient volcanic systems that produced much of this lava, exposing bands of lighter rhyolite and a line of volcanic plugs along the summit ridge. As well as those highlights mentioned on page 13 you can experience the following:Outline Itinerary Departures: year roundDay 1 Fly UK to Keflavik / Blue Lagoon / Perlan viewing platformDay 2 Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Station / Kerid / Gullfoss / Geysir / ThingvellirDay 3 Seljalandsfoss / Stora Dimon / Skogar / Solheimajokull glacier walk / Reynishverfi / DyrholaeyDay 4 Eldhraun / Skaftafell National ParkDay 5 Oraefajokull / Jokulsarlon / Hofn / Breiddalur (East Fjords region)Day 6 Egilsstadir / Lake Myvatn / Namaskard / Viti / Blue Lagoon of the NorthDay 7 Husavik / Tjornes Coast / Asbyrgi / Dettifoss Day 8 Hverfjall / Godafoss / AkureyriDay 9 Oxnadular / Vatnsdalsholar / Borgarfjordur / ReykjavikDay 10 Whale Watching or explore Reykjavik before returning to the UKDettifossLake Myvatn 16 Our trips are bound by our Booking Terms & Conditions - for details visit discover-the-world.co.uk/educationalvisitsEyjafjallajokull Erupts! From November 2011 we will be offering a free online study guide which focuses on Iceland's famously unpronounceable volcano, Eyjafjallajokull. The online study guide will include case study material and classroom lessons from keystage 3 to A-level. You will also have access to video footage of the eruption and its impact, several maps, diagrams and stunning images to help bring the classroom to life. On request we can send you a classroom poster and an Eyjafjallajokull ash sample. If you do go on to book a trip with Discover the World, we can provide you with field study sheets linked to the eruption, including our exclusive Eyjafjallajokull and Thorsmork tour (see page 13). We can also take you to the Thorvaldseyri Visitors Centre which shows a documentary on the impact Eyjafjallajokull had on a local farm. After the video, students can speak with some of the locals for their first hand account and to learn about the impact the eruption has had on their lives.Exclusive AccommodationAt Discover the World we use a variety of accommodation on our itineraries, designed to meet individual group's requirements and budgets. In addition to our standard countryside properties, we are proud to promote Vatnsholt, near Selfoss. Exclusive to Discover the World on the UK school travel market, this beautiful Icelandic farm has horses, cattle, dogs, cats, rabbits and hens. Be sure that you ask to see Elvis the dancing Icelandic goat! The accommodation is to a comfortable standard with exceptional views on a clear day of Mount Hekla, the Westman Islands and Eyjafjalljokull. From October to April this is also an excellent location for northern lights viewing, due to its remote setting and close proximity to the coast, the night skies are unusually clear here and there is little light pollution. In fact many northern lights tours drive to Vatnsholt due to the favourable conditions! Why not take a dip in the hot tub and wait for one of Mother Nature's most spectacular phenomena? Vatnsholt is a popular choice so if you are interested in including this in your itinerary, please book early. |
