This fl exible itinerary gives a taste of an incredible country, designed for those looking to combine a short visit to Greenland with their Iceland holiday. Stay amidst some of Greenland's most stunning scenery and enjoy spectacular views over fjords and mountains - ideal for those who appreciate walking through an unspoiled wilderness. The suggested itineraries below offer a pre and post- Greenland night in Reykjavik, however it is possible to tailor- make your stay in Iceland to include a self- drive or longer city break itinerary, or to add further nights in Greenland - simply call us to discuss your options. The attractive town of Tasiilaq on the island of Ammassalik, has a population of around 1600. It is ringed by huge jagged peaks, some of the highest mountains in the country in fact and, with its typical and very colourful houses dotted all over the hillside, it is the centre for the region. If you'd like to know more about the rich heritage of this fascinating place, the Tasiilaq Museum is well worth a visit. Several smaller settlements are scattered all over the district, amongst them Kulusuk, where the local Inuit population live from fi shing and sealing, sometimes being away from home for a large part of the year. Here, more than anywhere else in Greenland, the traditional skills of carving have survived. Hotel Kulusuk is on the eastern shore of the island and the stunning scenery and grandeur of Greenland are literally just outside the door! The hotel has a restaurant and bar and you'll stay here in rooms with private facilities. The delightful Hotel Ammassalik in Tasiilaq enjoys spectacular views over the ice- fi lled fjord and high mountains - it has its own lounge and bar - at this hotel you have a choice of rooms with or without private facilities, as well as Panorama suites with breathtaking views. Both locations also offer a number of excellent hiking opportunities and various optional activities are booked and payable at the hotel reception. ? Meal basis nights in Iceland are on a breakfast only basis with full board whilst in Greenland ( breakfast, lunch and two-course evening meal). Head out from Ilulissat each day for some incredible experiences unique to this wilderness island. You'll return home with memories of icebergs, Inuit and huskies, plus a lot more besides! The modern town of Ilulissat sits approximately 200km above the Arctic Circle, mid way along the west coast at the mouth of a 56km long ice fjord, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is here that you'll fi nd famous Disko Bay where icebergs of all shapes and sizes rise majestically from a sea of deep, dark blue only briefl y visible between constantly moving ice fl oes. It is the 5km wide face of the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier that keeps this bay supplied with ice, being one of the world's most productive glaciers fl owing on average at 25m a day. Stay at the lovely Hotel Arctic; enjoy cuisine prepared by award- winning chefs and marvel at the icebergs fl oating out in the fjord! Just a couple of kilometres from Ilulissat you'll fi nd the idyllic Sermermiut valley. In 1727 it was Greenland's biggest settlement and home to more than 250 people. Excavations have subsequently revealed that for thousands of years the beautiful valley has been home to all of the cultures that have lived along the west coast of Greenland. North of Ilulissat is the settlement of Qqaatsut/ Rodebay and the Eqip glacier, two more places you have the option of exploring during this trip. Ilulissat's population numbers around 4,500 people and at least 4,000 sled dogs, which underlines the importance of the sledge as a means of transport, even in a large modern town. The harbour is full of fi shing boats and trawlers as naturally, fi shing remains hugely important to the community. One of the most popular excursions is the midnight sun cruise on the bay - sailing amongst the icebergs and seeing them at close range is truly amazing. Perhaps visit a local settlement and see how time seems to have frozen as much as the landscape - see the ways of Greenlandic hunters and experience the hospitality of the locals.
