Horse riding is popular here too. The towns of Hveragerdi and Selfoss are close by therefore shopping for supplies or heading out to dinner is but a short hop. And of course with all that Reykjavik has to offer, a night out in the capital is also perfectly feasible. Both consist of a complex of timber- framed properties, surrounded by open meadows, located about an hour's drive from Reykjavik. MINNIBORGIR Medium sized properties are 41m ² , with one bedroom and facilities for two children to sleep in the lounge. The larger, two storey properties have two bedrooms and comfortably sleep up to 8. Facilities include kitchenette/ lounge area; bathroom ( shower/ WC); TV, video and CD player with radio and all have verandas with an outdoor hot tub and a barbeque. GLJUFUR These wooden summerhouses sleep 6 in two bedrooms ( double bed with a single bunk above) but additional sleeping space in the loft can be used to accommodate a further 2 people. Facilities include a kitchenette/ lounge area; bathroom ( shower/ WC); TV, video and CD player with radio. Each cottage boasts a large veranda with an outdoor hot tub, gas barbeque, table and chairs. SNAEFELLSNES PENINSULA ARNASTAPI COTTAGE This is located on the south coast of the stunning Snaefellsnes Peninsula, in the little fi shing village of the same name. Just a few hours drive from Reykjavik, the cottage occupies a beautiful sea view location, amongst stunning beaches and lava fi elds dominated by a snow capped volcano at its heart. It was this outer- worldly landscape that inspired Jules Verne to write Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The cottage has two bedrooms ( each sleep 3 - two in a double lower bunk bed and one in a single upper bunk). Beds are made up with linen, ready for use, and towels are provided. The kitchenette is equipped with a stove, microwave, small dishwasher and fridge and the lounge has a TV and video. Outside the cottage are two patios, one on each side with tables and chairs, a hot tub and a barbeque. Visit snow capped Snaefellsjokull; stroll along sandy beaches; view bird cliffs and sea stacks along a craggy coastline; charming fi shing villages and expansive lava fi elds. Just north from here is the gateway to the remote and absolutely beautiful West Fjords, should you wish to explore further afi eld. Erpstadir is a traditional old style wooden cottage modernised to good standards, set on a hill with great views. This is also a working farm with cows, sheep and horses so you'll have the opportunity to get to know the wildlife! The cottage sleeps up to 9 and has a double bedroom and two twin bedrooms ( plus extra beds if needs be). There is a comfortable lounge and kitchen area, a washing machine in the bathroom and outside, a veranda with a seating area and hot tub. NORTH ICELAND THE LAVA HOUSE Decorated throughout in a modern Scandinavian style, this spacious, fully furnished family home sleeps up to 12 in 5 bedrooms. The Lava House, or Stadahraun, has a fully equipped kitchen, a very large open-plan living and dining area and two bathrooms with shower/ WC. Lake Myvatn is the magnet for most - the lake itself is beautiful and beyond that is a collection of curious volcanic and geothermal wonders including the Nature Baths. Husavik or Akureyri are the nearest large towns and both offer interesting days out, with whale watching available from the latter. Jokulsa National Park, the Tjornes Peninsula, Asbyrgi and magnifi cent Dettifoss are just a few of the other places in the area well worth visiting, although some of these places are only accessible in the summer.
