OPTIONAL EXCURSIONSICELAND WEST FJORDS Kayaking in the Fjords ( 15 June - 30 Sep). Duration 2 ½ or 8 hours. The fjords here provide some of the best kayaking spots in Iceland - an ideal way to explore this lesser- known region with its breathtaking scenery and magnifi cent mountains. Look out for seals, whales and birdlife. Vigur Island ( 10 June to 31 Aug). Duration 3- 4 hours. A 30 minute guided boat trip from Isafjordur ( including refreshments) to this charming island gives you around two hours to spend ashore where you'll see how just 5 inhabitants experience their unusual way of life. The island is also a home for thousands of birds, including eider duck, Arctic terns, puffi ns and black guillemot. Hiking in the Hornstradir Nature Reserve ( Tues, 23 June to 18 Aug). Duration 12 hours. This area has been uninhabited since the early 50' s, due to the remoteness of the area and inclement climate. Now the fl ora and fauna is protected, so foxes, birds, seals and plants are found in abundance. The 14km guided hike, reached by boat from Isafjordur, takes you through the abandoned settlements. A shorter 9- 10 hour tour is also available on Saturdays, as is a 12 hour King & Queen of Cliffs tour on Thursdays, taking in the 500m tall Haelavikurbjarg sea cliff. SNAEFELLSNES & BORGARFJORDUR Unique Adventure ( 15 May to 15 Sep). Duration approx 2 ¼ hours. Explore the natural paradise of Breidafjordur Bay by boat, with its fantastic variety of bird life, including puffi ns, eider ducks, kittiwakes, fulmars and white-tailed sea eagles. Taste delicious scallops and the freshest sushi! The boat trip departs from Stykkisholmur on the north side of Snaefellsnes. Sea Angling ( 1 Jun to 31 Aug). Duration approx 2 hours. Beautiful Breidafjordur Bay has been known for centuries for its abundant fi shing grounds. Your captain will sail to the best places to catch fi sh; the most common here is of course cod, but it is also possible to hook halibut, redfi sh and coalfi sh. Sea angling rods are available for hire, and it is possible to pre-arrange for a local restaurant to cook your fi sh for a delicious supper ( both at additional cost). Flatey by Ferry ( 10 Jun - 22 Aug). Duration various. Although the Baldur ferry is often used as transportation between Snaefellsnes and the West Fjords, it is also possible to hop on at Stykkisholmur as a foot passenger and take a day trip to the tiny island of Flatey in the middle of Breidafjordur Bay ( no cars are allowed on the island). Overnight stays on Flatey are possible - contact us for details. Horse Riding is also available on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, as are glacier trips on Snaefellsjokull; these are best booked locally. Why not consider a midnight round of golf in June or July at Stykkisholmur or near Borganes! Please note call us or visit our website for up- to- date excursion prices and departure details. It is advisable to pre- book where possible to ensure availability, which cannot be guaranteed when booking locally, especially during peak summer months. All excursions are weather- permitting and subject to minimum numbers. The duration shown may include transfer times. Additional insurance premiums may be required for some activities ( such as glacier trips); please check your policy. ACTIVITIES & EXCURSIONS h . tel. 01737 218 800 | discover- the- world. co. uk75
