ESCORTEDICELAND 81 Our range of escorted tours enable you to travel as part of a group, sharing your experiences with like- minded people. You'll be accompanied by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide, who will help bring the natural and cultural wonders of Iceland to life. ESCORTED ICELAND Maybe you've always dreamt of watching the northern lights; or enjoying a gentle countryside coach tour; fancy trying a horse riding or activity- based camping trip; or like the sound of an exciting weekend in a superjeep? From short breaks to two- week holidays, we have options to suit all ages, budgets and interests. Just browse pages 80- 99, and give us a call to discuss your options. GROUP SIZE Each tour page in our brochure shows the maximum group size for a particular escorted holiday. Our ever- popular Countryside group tours ( pages 88- 93) consist of a maximum of 26 participants, whereas the Superjeep Weekend Safari can have as few as two! GUIDES AND DRIVERS Our driver/ guides are chosen for their dedication, enthusiasm, organisational and people skills. They are knowledgeable, helpful, caring and thoroughly professional. ITINERARIES - HIGHLIGHTS AND HIDDEN GEMS We spend a lot of time researching and planning our itineraries, and listening to feedback from our guides and clients. Most trips include a mix of touring and time exploring on foot, visiting specifi c attractions - your guide will ensure you get the most out of every day! TRANSPORTATION The size and type of transportation depends on your chosen tour and the number in the group. Modern buses are used on the Countryside or Classic tours, whilst some itineraries simply require a minibus. Other more special interest tours use a 4WD or superjeep and more robust mountain vehicles are used when driving on gravel roads and highland tracks ( such as on our camping tour). ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS The properties offered on our escorted itineraries provide a warm welcome in excellent locations. Most have their own restaurant and bar, and offer en suite rooms. Please visit our website or see pages 66- 72 for further information on specifi c properties. The tour pages in this brochure and on our website show the meal basis for each group tour. Half board is a two- course set menu ( for example a soup starter followed by fi sh or lamb - hearty and tasty food); hotels can cater to specifi c dietary requirements if notifi ed well in advance. Due to the variety of restaurants in Reykjavik, stays in the capital are on a bed and breakfast basis. Stops will be made for lunch each day as the itinerary dictates, and are payable locally ( unless indicated otherwise). COUNTRYSIDE TOURS As the cornerstone of our Iceland programme and a success year after year, our Countryside Tours offer a fascinating and in depth experience of the island, with a focus on nature and culture. Popular with fi rst and second- time visitors alike, the tours are based around several hand- picked centres and different regions. PRIVATE GROUPS Contact us to discuss adapting our escorted tours for a private group; see page 104 for details. tel. 01737 218 800 | discover- the- world. co. uk

For visitors the excitement lies in knowing that you will be travelling where conventional vehicles simply cannot venture, as well as seeing the wilder side of the island. In winter, studded tyres give good traction on ice and reducing their air pressure allows the vehicles to glide over deep snow, rather than sink into it. In the summer, the vehicle's high clearance and enormous tyres cope with ease on uneven terrain and with the services of an expert driver/ guide you'll be surprised at what the vehicles can tackle! On this trip you'll be based in Reykjavik. Spend two or more full days exploring wild and out of the way places in one of these incredible superjeeps and discover the remarkable and dramatic landscapes that make Iceland so unique. Our driver/ guides are full of character and will happily share their knowledge about the places visited as well as ensuring the ride is exciting! Begin by driving the Golden Circle route and visit three of Iceland's most famous natural wonders: the Geysir geothermal area with its spouting hot springs; two- tiered Gullfoss as well as historic Thingvellir, a scenic and very rugged area ideally suited to being explored by superjeep. During this trip there is also an optional snowmobile excursion ( additional cost) on Langjokull, Iceland's second largest glacier. The next day, enjoy a South Shore and Glacial Adventure excursion exploring a lowland region of lush farmland, dramatic coastline, glaciers and striking waterfalls. Visit impressive Skogafoss with its magnifi cent 60m high curtain of water, take a walk behind elegant Seljalandsfoss, drive along black sand beaches and see the natural rock arch at Dyrholaey, teeming with birdlife in the spring and summer months. The trip continues to Myrdalsjokull where you can enjoy a guided walk on the glacier and admire the views ( possible optional snowmobiling trip). At the end of each day return to Reykjavik, Iceland's lively capital, where the evenings are free to relax - perhaps enjoy the nightlife or dine out at one of the city's fi ne restaurants. On the 4- night trip, enjoy an extra day and traverse the craggy southwest of Iceland on the Reykjanes & Blue Lagoon Safari, seeing 11 lighthouses including the oldest and tallest in the country! Visit eerie Kleifarvatn, a huge 100m deep lake and the setting for author Arnaldur Indridason's thriller ' The Draining Lake'. Here you will also fi nd the ' Bridge between Continents' which marks where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart.
