During this tour in a group that averages around 15 ( max 26), you will explore three of Iceland's most stunning waterfalls - impressive Gullfoss, mighty Skogafoss and beautiful Seljalandsfoss, which tumbles, out over a cliff, allowing you to walk behind it. The geysers at the Geysir geothermal area are captivating - marvel as the heated waters bubble up and gush, sometimes 30m into the air. Witness the diverse scenery of the south as you journey over vast glacial outwash plains to reach the Myrdalsjokull glacier, where there are spectacular walks and the chance for an optional snowmobile ride. With the ever- changing scenery, including the beautiful wooded Thorsmork Valley and Mount Hekla as well as the rugged south coast, your camera will be very busy! The tour includes a visit to the unforgettable Blue Lagoon. OUTLINE ITINERARY Day 1 fl y from London to Kefl avik on a Sunday and transfer to Hotel Ork near the village of Hveragerdi, about a 90 minute drive from Kefl avik. Check in for a 4- night stay at this comfortable hotel which has rooms with private facilities. The hotel also has a TV lounge, restaurant, bar and hot tub. Day 2 explore the Golden Circle route and visit cascading Gullfoss, the Geysir geothermal area and Thingvellir, site of the ancient assembly. Also walk around the rim of a crater. Day 3 travel via the remote and rugged south coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula to the geothermal area of Krisuvik. Look out for puffi ns on the nearby bird cliffs before continuing to another geothermal wonder - the Blue Lagoon. Stroll and take pictures and, if you wish, take a dip in the therapeutic waters ( entrance fee to swim payable locally). Day 4 visit Reykjavik where you can enjoy sightseeing, shopping, try out one of the many stylish restaurants or street cafés or perhaps visit a museum or gallery. Should you choose, take an optional whale watching trip or go riding on a pure- bred Icelandic horse. Day 5 set off for Seljalandsfoss, an elegant waterfall which looks fabulous from every conceivable angle. The adventurous ( sure-footed) can opt to walk behind its shimmering curtain. Travel along an uneven track passing by a glacial lagoon, formed as the ice retreated. the Thorsmork Valley. The whole area is scored by valley glaciers and swift rivers. Explore this dramatic wilderness on foot before checking into the Hotel Dyrholaey for 3 nights ( details page 68). Day 6 head east crossing the sand plains of Myrdalssandur to Kirkjubaejarklaustur - stop here to see the lava remains from the eruption of 1783. Continue to Skaftafell, now part of the enormous Vatnajokull National Park and walk to its glacier, seeing Svartifoss en route, an enchanting waterfall certainly worth a photo or two! Carry on to the stunning glacial lagoon, Jokulsarlon and take a cruise amongst its icebergs ( at additional cost). Day 7 reach the Myrdalsjokull glacier after traversing glacial outwash plains. Optional snowmobile excursion ( at additional cost). Carry on to Skogar where you may choose to visit to the museum ( entrance fee applicable). Nearby, approach the foot of the spectacular 60m high Skogafoss and no doubt, stand in awe and feel its spray! On a clear day, you may be able to see the Westman Islands offshore as you explore the dramatic black sand coastline around Dyrholaey. Day 8 visit the coastal towns of Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki before transferring to Kefl avik airport for the Sunday fl ight back to London*.
