Join us for two days of spectacular racing at Churchill Downs! CHURCHILL DOWNS This will be the seventh time, in the twenty- seven runnings of the Breeders' Cup, that Churchill Downs has been the chosen venue. Churchill Downs opened in 1875 and the first Kentucky Derby was run in the same year. The twin spires atop the grandstands are the most recognisable feature of Churchill Downs and are used as a symbol of the track. Churchill Downs covers 147 acres and the main, oval, dirt track is one mile in circumference and the turf track, inside the main track, is 7 furlongs in circumference. In addition to the track, clubhouse and stables, Churchill Downs also contains the Kentucky Derby Museum which focuses on the history of the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs. BREEDERS' CUP Since its inaugural running at Hollywood Park in 1984, the Breeders' Cup has established itself as the season- ending World Championship of Thoroughbred Racing. 2009 was the year that Zenyatta became a household name in America! The large, five year old mare took on the " boys" in the Breeders' Cup Classic and powered past five horses up the straight to take her record to a perfect 14 wins from 14 starts and became the first female to win the Breeders' Cup Classic. Her achievement seemed to overshadow other tremendous victories earlier in the day - the amazing Goldikova who, for the second successive year, won the Breeders' Cup Mile; the great Conduit who fought, and held on, to win the Breeders' Cup Turf for the second consecutive year and the partnership of John Gosden and Frankie Dettori who won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf for a second year, this time with Pounced. On the Friday, Man of Iron won the Breeders' Cup Marathon for Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle stable and Midday, won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. THE RACES $ 25.5 million prize money - the richest event in sporting history! Friday 05 November - Ladies' Day - the following races will be run: $ 2 million Filly & Mare Turf, $ 2 million Juvenile Fillies, $ 2 million Ladies' Classic, $ 1 million Filly & Mare Sprint and $ 1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf. Saturday 06 November - the most prestigious day of the Championship - the following races will be run: $ 5 million Classic, $ 3 million Turf, $ 2 million Juvenile, $ 2 million Mile, $ 2 million Sprint, $ 1 million Dirt Mile, $ 1 million Juvenile Turf, $ 1 million Turf Sprint and $ 500,000 Dirt Marathon.
