However, over the years the number of trekkers on this route has caused environmental problems and in 2004 the Peruvian Government took steps to restrict numbers by limiting the trekking permits available. As these are now in very limited supply, particularly during the peak season months from July - September, it is advisable to book your tour as far in advance as possible to maximise the likelihood of us being able to obtain a permit for you. At the time of booking you must provide us with your full passport details and we will then attempt to purchase a permit. Whilst we can never guarantee that we will be able to obtain a permit for you, the fact that we have an office in Peru means we are as well placed as possible to secure one. We may also occasionally have to make minor adjustments to the tour itinerary to ensure sufficient trail permits. Can I book close to departure? It may be possible for us to obtain a trekking permit for you a short period before departure, but this will depend on the time of year and how many permits are still available. Please check availability with us and we will do our best to arrange a permit for you. We will require your full passport details as well as the tour deposit from you at this stage, but will refund this if we are unable to confirm your trek. Fitness? A good level of physical fitness is required. We will be trekking at altitude ( max 4,200m) in a rugged mountain environment crossing a series of high passes involving plenty of ascent and descent. We will pass a number of Inca ruins along the way and the scenery is beautifully varied so the stunning landscapes should take our minds off any aching limbs!
