DAYS 2- 4: EASTER ISLAND- Easter Island is one of the most isolated places on the planet, 3,000km from the nearest populated land, and one of the most fascinating archaeological riddles of all time. Its inhabitants, whose origin is still an enigma, developed the only script known to people of America and Polynesia at that time. They also carved enormous 100 ton basalt statues ( called Moai) from a quarry in the side of a volcano, transported them many kilometres to the coast and erected them on giant stone altars. In addition to its historical interest Easter Island combines deserted beaches, clear waters, a pleasant climate, a fascinating culture and remarkable volcanic remains. Dotted around the island are several extinct volcanic craters, two of which now contain freshwater lakes, and hundreds of caves, once used as refuges or secret burial places. Take three full days to explore the island. There are plenty of options; you can hike to the volcanoes, relax on Anakena beach, go horse- riding in search of the moais, visit the quarry where they were built or even go scuba- diving.
