Encompassing some of the most amazing natural sights to be found anywhere in Europe, Iceland is a land unlike any other - perfect for those who love the great outdoors and incredible natural scenery. Reykjavik is a great introduction to this new world. Spend the evening enjoying the cosmopolitan delights of this modern city. DAY 2: HVOLSVOLLUR- Leaving Reykjavik behind we head to Hvolsvollur, taking in some of Iceland's best attractions along the way. We see the spectacular Gulfoss waterfall and the spouting waterhole of Geysir which has given its name to all others. ( B) DAY 3: SKAFTAFELL- Drive along Iceland's dramatic south coast, visiting waterfalls, canyons, and other strange geological phenomena before we arrive at Skaftafell National Park. ( B) DAY 4: SKAFTAFELL- A full free day to explore this magnificent national park with its many glaciers and thundering waterfalls. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking for the more energetic or perhaps take a boat ride on the famous Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, site of many a Hollywood blockbuster. ( B) DAY 5: LAKE MYVATN- Driving past mountains and through the rugged fjords of eastern Iceland we head towards Lake Myvatn, one of the most beautiful areas in the country. ( B) DAY 6: LAKE MYVATN- A full day to explore Lake Myvatn and Jokulsargljufur National Park. The scenery here is stunning, including awe- inspiring canyons, old volcanic craters, Europe's most powerful waterfall and boiling mud pools. ( B) DAY 7: LAKE MYVATN - AKUREYRI-Further time to explore the area, or take an optional whale watching tour at Husavik, an area of Iceland which is one of the most reliable in Europe for sightings of these massive creatures. Later we continue to Akureyri, known as Iceland's northern capital. Located beneath snow- clad mountains, this is one of the most interesting and pretty towns in the country. ( B) DAY 8: STYKKISHOLMUR- Drive to Stykkisholmur on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Along the way we stop to see some of the local traditional turf houses as well as more amazing scenery.
