TANZANIA 183 AFRICA Imaginative Facts Tour code: KTMG • Activities: 6 day trek on Mt Kilimanjaro. Moshi is situated at the foot of the mighty Mt Kilimanjaro, its snow- capped summit looming high above us in the sky. Don't be too intimidated! This evening there will be a briefing on our trek and the route we are following. The Marangu Route is roughly 80km long, and is one of the most popular. Accommodation is in communal huts and our guides and porters take good care of us including cooking all our meals. DAY 2: MANDARA ( 2,725m)- After breakfast transfer to Marangu Gate. Commence trekking through beautiful rainforest to Mandara Hut. ( BLD) DAY 3: HOROMBO HUT ( 3,700m)- Continue our climb to Horombo Hut. Leaving the rainforest, the vegetation will change to stunted clumps of heather, ' everlasting' flowers and short tussock grasses. ( BLD) DAY 4: HOROMBO ( 4,330m)- An important day for acclimatisation with a walk to Point Mawenzi ( 4,600m). This additional day certainly assists in your chances of summit success as your body gradually adapts to the high altitude. Return to Horombo Hut for the night. ( BLD) DAY 5: KIBO HUT ( 4,730m)- Set off early and continue up to the dry, rugged and bizarrely flattish saddle area between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Overnight at Kibo Hut. ( BLD) DAY 6: UHURU PEAK ( 5,895m)- Summit day! We will be woken at midnight to begin the final ascent. The first section is hard work, climbing slowly in the dark on scree up to Gillman's Point ( 5,690m). From there we continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The views ( hopefully at sunrise if your pace is good) will be worth the effort! After time at the top we descend to Horombo Hut to spend the night. The Rongai Route approaches the mountain from the north and is widely regarded as the most beautiful as well as being one of the least travelled routes up the mountain. Thus you can enjoy the ascent and the varied scenery including farmland, lush forests rich in wildlife, breathtaking views of the vast plains below, the lunar desert at the ' saddle' and the captivating rock towers of Mawenzi Peak without numerous other trekkers intruding. Accommodation is in tents and our guides and porters take good care of us including cooking all our meals. DAY 2: FIRST CAVE ( 1,800m)- We begin our trek up Mt Kilimanjaro, passing through cultivated land that is used by local farmers, until we reach our overnight stop at First Cave. ( BLD) DAY 3: KIKEWALA CAVE CAMP ( 3,800m)- We walk today for approximately seven hours, gaining in altitude and passing through the forest zone until we reach the moorland zone. We enjoy views of Kibo Peak en route to our overnight camp at Kikewala Cave. ( BLD) DAY 4: MAWENZI TARN HUT ( 4,330m)- Today we climb up grassy slopes, eventually coming out of the zone of vegetation and onto rock until we finally reach Mawenzi Tarn Hut, where our camp is spectacularly located by the Mawenzi cliffs. ( BLD) DAY 5: KIBO HUT ( 4,730m)- Continuing our climb we cross through lunar landscapes en route to our camp at the base of Kibo Peak.
