( BLD) DAYS 8 & 9: COMMUNITY PROJECT-Assist in the refurbishment of a rural primary school whilst interacting with the children encouraging the importance of environmental conservation through education. Your personal contribution here is essential in reducing human/ wildlife conflict in the area. ( BLD) DAY 10: TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK-Tsavo East National Park arguably offers one of the best locations in Africa for game viewing. Here we will have the chance to spot the Big Five while taking in the breathtaking scenery of Tsavo's famous ' red' plains, truly one of the few remaining wilderness areas in the world. Under the supervision of a qualified guide we will utilise our recently learnt skills to set up a bush camp for a very special and unforgettable overnight experience under the stars. ( BLD) DAY 11: TSAVO EAST - DIANI BEACH- At sunrise we set off along the ' River Route', an excellent habitat for big game. Head for the coast, by game driving via the Aruba Dam and the famous Dika Plains. ( BLD) DAY 12: DIANI BEACH- Chill out on Kenya's famous south coast at Diani Beach. DAY 2: ENGARUKA- Visit the Engaruka Ruins in the rift valley before driving to Lake Natron, a veritable carpet of flamingos. Drive on to Oldoinyo Lengai, where our Maasai guide will explain the rain dances and fertility rituals that take place there. Those who wish can hike overnight to the summit to see sunrise - tough but utterly memorable. ( BLD) DAY 3: MTO WA MBU- Visit a genuine Maasai homestead to meet the elders then continue to a sacred forest site to meet the warriors and join in with their singing and dancing, before heading to Mto Wa Mbu. ( BLD) DAYS 4 & 5: SERENGETI- The Serengeti is Tanzania's premier national park and simply one of the best places for spotting Africa's superb wildlife amongst its vast plains. Take several game drives. ( BLD) DAY 6: NGORONGORO CRATER- Drive to the Ngorongoro Crater via Olduvai Gorge ' the cradle of mankind'. Enjoy a game drive and a picnic lunch inside the crater. ( BLD) DAYS 7 & 8: YAEDA CHINI- Drive to Yaeda Chini to meet the Hadza people and try to get our tongues around a few basic greetings in the click- based Hadzane language! Join the local women searching for edible roots and wild berries and learn about the medicinal uses of various plants. Visit a local school and join the elders in evening sessions of singing and dancing. ( BLD) DAYS 9 & 10: ARUSHA- Drive to Arusha. We have a choice of optional cultural workshops in Arusha: Tanzanian cookery, drum and dance, Tinga Tinga painting, or batik making. ( Day 9 - BL, DAY 10 - B) DAY 11: KILIMANJARO- Drive to Nkuu Ndoo, a Chagga village in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Visit an elderly Chagga herbalist at her home for a tour of her medicinal garden and in the afternoon meet a local midwife to chat about the challenges of childbirth in rural Tanzania. There follows a gentle hike to the Weruweru waterfalls, through tropical montane forest, banana plantations and coffee farms. We then drive to the Pare Mountains for an evening of traditional singing, dancing and storytelling. ( BLD) DAY 12: DAR ES SALAAM- Travel by bus to Dar es Salaam where the rest of the day is free. ( B) DAY 13: ZANZIBAR- Take the ferry across to Zanzibar and drive to Paje, on the idyllic and unspoilt east coast of the island. The rest of the day is free to relax on the beach. ( B) DAY 14: ZANZIBAR- After an early breakfast, we take a trip out on a fishing boat to try and catch our lunch! Assuming that we manage it, we'll come back to the village and clean our catch, before helping our hosts to prepare a traditional meal of fish in coconut sauce. In the afternoon we meet a local healer and learn about the Swahili traditions of herbal, ritual and spiritual healing, as well as visiting a sacred limestone cave. ( BL). DAY 15: ZANZIBAR- In the morning, we take a tour of a spice plantation, to see how vanilla, cloves, cinnamon and many other spices are grown. DAYS 2 & 3: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK-After breakfast we move on to the Serengeti, one of the best known wildlife areas in the world. The Serengeti is unequalled for its natural beauty and contains more than 3 million large mammals all spread over the vast endless plains. Morning and afternoon game drives. ( BLD) DAY 4: NGORONGORO CRATER- We drive to Ngorongoro Crater via the Olduvai Gorge, where fossil remains dating back to 1.75 million years ago were found. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the natural wonders of the world. A large extinct volcano, with an area of 259 sq. kms, it is a self-contained park with a huge variety of game and birdlife. Game viewing is almost guaranteed to provide the ' Big Five'. We descend into the crater using 4WD vehicles for game viewing. ( BLD) DAY 5: TARANGIRE - MONDULI- Drive to Tarangire National Park which has the highest concentration of game outside of the Serengeti ecosystem. Explore the area on a game drive before heading to Monduli town for the night. ( BL) DAYS 6- 10: MONDULI JUU - Transfer to the Maasai Village of Eluai and spend the next few days participating in a rewarding volunteer programme. ( B) Your Involvement The Programme Days 6- 10 The Maasai village of Eluai lies in the shadow of Mt Meru near the town of Arusha, and it is here that Imaginative Volunteers will be based. A variety of tasks await you, including bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, painting, gardening and farming ( as well as milking the goats) although the exact activities will be scheduled according to the season and community needs. No specific experience or training is necessary, just a healthy amount of enthusiasm. Other activities for the week include Maa language lessons, hiking and a visit to a traditional Maasai homestead. You'll learn from Maasai warriors about medicines and plants and may even join the community forester on one of his outreach visits to community groups.
