DAY 2: ARUSHA- Cross the border into Tanzania. Continue to Arusha. ( BLD) DAYS 3- 5: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK AND NGORONGORO CRATER- Travelling in specialised 4WD vehicles we view the magnificent game these parks offer. The plains of Serengeti National Park are world renowned for the great wildebeest migrations. We also visit the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world that plays host to up to 25,000 larger mammals and 100 species of birds. In the afternoon of Day 5 we return to our camp in Arusha. ( Days 3 & 4 - BLD, Day 5 - BL) DAY 6: DAR ES SALAAM- Proceed to Dar es Salaam and camp on the beach. ( BL) DAYS 7- 9: ZANZIBAR ISLAND- Catch the ferry to Zanzibar. This Indian Ocean island is a cultural melting pot of African, Arabic and Indian cultures, and renowned for its spices. We spend one night in the historic and atmospheric capital Stone Town and then transfer to the west coast with its turquoise waters, coastal reefs and beautiful palm fringed beaches. ( B) DAY 10: DAR ES SALAAM- Return by ferry to Dar es Salaam. ( BD) DAY 11: KISOLONZA- Early morning departure through pristine and stunning bush for our camp at Kisolonza. ( BLD) DAYS 12 & 13: LAKE MALAWI - CHITIMBA-Today we cross into Malawi - known as the warm heart of Africa. Lake Malawi is home to over 350 species of fish and its clear freshwater and beaches are excellent for swimming and relaxing. We stay at Chitimba, on the shores of the lake. ( BLD) DAY 14: LAKE MALAWI - SENGA BAY-Our journey continues down the lake to Salima and the fantastic Senga Bay. Time to explore local villages or try out the many water sports and activities. ( BLD) DAYS 15 & 16: ZAMBIA - SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK- Heading west we enter into Zambia and the awesome South Luangwa National Park - one of Africa's best- kept secrets. We enjoy two game drives into the park; the second will be in the evening where we make use of a spotlight to track down nocturnal species such as leopard and spotted genet. ( Day 15 - BL, Day 16 - BLD) DAY 17: LUANGWA RIVER- We head to our camp on the west bank of the Luangwa River. Optional activities here include boat trips and canoeing. ( BLD) DAY 18: LOWER ZAMBEZI- Travel to our camp at the confluence of the Zambezi and Kafue rivers. ( BLD) DAYS 19 & 20: LOWER ZAMBEZI CANOE SAFARI- We embark on an overnight canoe safari on the mighty Zambezi River. This gives us a great opportunity to see game and birdlife up close. On Day 19 we camp overnight at a secluded spot on the banks of the river - undoubtedly one of the highlights of this trip. Please note that if you would prefer not to take part in this you will be able to stay behind at base camp and take a sunset cruise instead. The canyon is one of the most staggering sights of Africa, and is second in size only to the Grand Canyon. We have the chance to take a walk along the edge. ( Day 3 - BLD, Day 4 - BL) DAYS 5 & 6: NAMIB NAUKLUFT NATIONAL PARK- Continue to the Namib Naukluft NP and the giant sand dunes of Sossusvlei - the highest in the world. On Day 6 we rise early to climb the dunes for fantastic views, after which we proceed on to Sossusvlei and take a walk through the desert to the vlei. ( Day 5 - BLD, Day 6 - BL) DAYS 7 & 8: SWAKOPMUND- En route to Swakopmund we stop in Walvis Bay for a picnic lunch. We spend two nights in Swakopmund, a delightful Bavarian style town. There are plenty of activities to keep you occupied here, from deep sea fishing to dolphin cruises. ( Day 7 - BL, Day 8 - B) DAYS 9 & 10: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK-Etosha N. P. is Namibia's premier park. We spend our time here on game drives, visiting some of the waterholes in the area hoping to catch some of Etosha's big game including desert elephants, lions, black rhino, leopard and cheetahs. ( Day 9 - BLD, Day 10 - BL) DAY 11: WATERBERG PLATEAU NATIONAL PARK- Travel to the stunning Waterberg Plateau N. P., a beautiful area with spectacular rock formations and home to endangered species. ( BLD) DAY 12: GOBABIS- Travel towards the border with Botswana. We stay on a private game farm dedicated to the protection of big cats. We will have the opportunity to watch the daily feeding of some of these rescued animals. ( BL) DAY 13: MAUN- Head for Botswana and Maun, the gateway to the amazing Okavango Delta. ( BL) DAY 14 & 15: OKAVANGO DELTA- We fly by light aircraft into the Okavango Delta, an incredible maze of inland waterways and lagoons and a haven for wildlife and birds. Our camp is located deep in the delta and we have the option of taking game walks and mokoro safaris. ( BLD) DAY 16: NATA- Continue east towards Nata. The birdlife in this area is particularly spectacular. ( B) DAY 17: CHOBE NATIONAL PARK- Travel north to Kasane and our lodge on the banks of the Chobe River. The fabulous Chobe N. P. is famous for its huge herds of elephants and we have a guided sunset river cruise which provide excellent sightings of elephant, hippo, crocodile and an impressive array of birds and plains game. ( BL) DAY 12: BRANDBERG- Drive to Brandberg Mountain where we take a walk in search of ancient rock paintings. ( BLD) DAYS 13- 15: RHINO TRACKING AND HIMBA VILLAGE- We head to the desert area of Damaraland, a hauntingly beautiful desert area that is home to good numbers of game, including the rare black rhino. We spend one day tracking rhino and another day is spent visiting a Himba village. ( BLD) DAYS 16 & 17: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK-Drive to Etosha, Namibia's premier national park. We spend our time here on game drives, visiting some of the waterholes in the area hoping to catch some of Etosha's big game including elephants, lions, cheetahs and various species of antelopes. ( BLD) DAY 18: RUNDU- We head to Rundu, on the banks of the Okavango River, where we set up camp. ( BLD) DAYS 19 & 20: NORTHERN OKAVANGO DELTA- We head into the northern part of the Okavango Delta. This part of Namibia is very different from the rest and instead of arid landscape we find ourselves among lush vegetation and numerous waterways. Our time here is spent on game walks and mokoro ( dug- out canoe) trips in search of an amazing diversity of wildlife. ( BLD) DAY 21: CAPRIVI STRIP- Depart the Delta to our camp on the Caprivi Strip. ( BLD) DAY 22: VICTORIA FALLS- Cross the border into Zimbabwe and on to Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Free time to visit the falls. ( BL) DAY 23: VICTORIA FALLS- Tour ends. ( B) Your Involvement The Programme Days 2- 8 Your task here will be to help eradicate the sickle bush helping to restore the local ecology back to its natural and original state. Once again the cheetah will have its natural environment back. Your normal working day will start at dawn. Bush clearing will be the main daily activity but this will be flexible. We will work with breaks until approx 12noon then we stop for a well- earned lunch and siesta time. Work will continue until about 4pm when we down tools and head off for our afternoon activity. This may be leopard and cheetah tracking, a bushman walk, game drives or a host of other activities. You may also get involved in other conservation measures. Explore this wonderful country whilst preserving its natural habitat Spend a week restoring land to its natural state to provide a better habitat for local wildlife. Based at the famous AfriCat Foundation, dedicated to the conservation of large carnivores you will also have close access to the orphaned leopards, lions and cheetahsthat are housed here.
