DAY 2: KOTA KINABALU - MIKI'S SURVIVAL CAMP- Drive to Kiau, a traditional village in the foothills of Mt. Kinabalu. Hike through the jungle, enjoying superb views of the surrounding scenery and abundant flora and fauna. ( BLD) DAY 3: KIAU VILLAGE- Morning hike out of the jungle to Kiau where we spend the night with the local villagers, gaining a unique insight into their way of life. ( BLD) DAY 4: KIAU VILLAGE - MT KINABALU-Begin our ascent of Mt Kinabalu, South East Asia's highest peak ( 4,101m). We spend the night in a mountain hut at 3,300m. ( B) DAY 5: MT KINABALU- Rise early to climb to the summit. The hike is worth it as the views from the top of Mt Kinabalu are breathtaking, with a sea of clouds and jungle spreading out beneath us. Later we descend to the foot of the mountain where we spend the night in a lodge. ( D) DAY 6: MT KINABALU - PORING- Drive to Poring to soak in the hot springs and revitalise any sore muscles. Later we follow canopy walkways with stunning views over the roof of the rainforest. ( BD) DAYS 7 & 8: PORING - SUKAU - BATU PUTIH HOMESTAY- Morning drive through palm oil plantations and the rainforest to Sukau. We journey deep into the mangrove forest to the remote village of Batu Putih where we spend two nights in a homestay. This area offers unrivalled opportunities for birdwatching and we should also see the enormous hornbill. Enjoy a full day following trails through the forest to appreciate the local flora and fauna. ( BLD) DAY 9: SEPILOK- Today we drive overland to Sepilok Jungle Resort. Afternoon visit to the world famous orang utan sanctuary with the chance to see these amazing ' men of the forest' being fed. Truly a highlight of any journey to Borneo. ( B) DAYS 10 & 11: PULAU TIGA- Morning flight departing Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu. Transfer to Pulau Tiga. Pulau Tiga is the largest of the three islands that form the Pulau Tiga Park and is famous for its three mud volcanoes. Unlike many other offshore islands of Borneo, the vegetation on this island is practically untouched. Enjoy a full day of exploration here. ( Day 10 - BD, Day 11 - BLD) DAYS 12 & 13: KINARUT- We travel by boat to Kuala Penyu. On arrival we transfer to Kinarut, a peaceful stretch of coastline just outside Kota Kinabalu. We have two nights in a small beach hotel with time to relax, sunbathe on the beach or perhaps take a boat trip out to one of the outlying islands. ( B) DAY 14: KINARUT- Tour ends. Camp on terraces perched above several cascading mountain streams leading to the Ofi Creek - perfect for relaxing in. ( BLD) DAY 4: NAURO- One of our most challenging days trekking - a steep mountain climb over the Maguli Range, reaching the top via an exciting ascent up the ' Japanese Ladder'. Our reward is incredibly spectacular views over the Owen- Stanley mountain range. Descend to Nauro to enjoy the fresh produce of the village garden. ( BLD) DAY 5: MANARI- An adventurous day's hiking which includes some slippery swampland walking and steep ridge climbing that leads us to the village of Manari. We may be able to visit one of the few surviving local tribesmen who assisted the allies in forcing back the Japanese forces. ( BLD) DAY 6: BRIGADE HILL - EFOGI- Steep walking today up Brigade Hill to Efogi. We pass stunning scenery and the site of one of the major battles during the Kokoda campaign. ( BLD) DAY 7: DIGGERS REST- We cross our highest point of the trek at Mount Bellamy, 2,190 metres. Antarctic Beech forest, phosphorescent fungi and giant Pandanus line the track as we wind our way through to ' Digger's Rest' camp. ( BLD) DAY 8: EORA CREEK- Today we make our way down to Templeton's Crossing taking a break at the famous Kokoda Gap. Continue to Eora Creek for the night. ( BLD) DAY 9: DENIKI - A typical log crossing before a steady uphill trek to Alola with breathtaking views of the valleys to the north. Visit the battlefield and memorial at Isurava. An undulating track takes us to Deniki. ( BLD) DAY 10: KOKODA - BUNA- Our final day sees us descend to the beautiful village of Hoi. A cool refreshing dip in the creek is your reward for a long day's trek. Easy walking through rubber plantations to our finishing point. Drive to Buna. ( BLD) DAYS 11 & 12: BUNA- Two days to relax, swim and wander around this fascinating area. Many of our porters come from here so you might well find yourself being shown off to their families. The locals' hospitality is well known and they will treat us to a welcoming village dance and feast. ( BLD) DAY 13: PORT MORESBY- Today we bid farewell to our porters and travel by truck to the airstrip in Popondetta where we fly back to the capital Port Moresby. Visit the moving memorial and cemetery at Bomana, the burial site of thousands of soldiers.
