Sail along the mighty Mekong River through Laos and amble through the ancient Khmer capital of Angkor in Cambodia. This trip includes a three-hour trek through the forest to these multi-tiered waterfalls, where the water cascades into deep blue pools - lovely for a cooling swim in the tropics.Trip InfoDeparture DatesDay 1-2 / Bangkok No activities are planned for Day 1, so you may arrive at any time. The following day we explore some of Bangkok's highlights before boarding our northbound overnight sleeper train for Chiang Mai.Day 3 / Chiang Mai Chiang Mai is an ancient walled city dotted with temples and markets. Explore at leisure and, in the evening, bargain in the Night Bazaar for a real buzz and some great buys.Day 4-5 / Huay Xai - Mekong River - Pakbeng We cross the border into Laos and spend the evening in a sleepy Laotian riverside town. The following day we meander down the mighty Mekong by boat. In the late afternoon we arrive at the small village of Pakbeng, where we stay overnight in a rustic guesthouse.Day 6-7 / Luang Prabang Another slow boat take us down river to serene Luang Prabang. On the way, we visit the Buddhist temple caves at Pak Ou. While in Luang Prabang, the many beautiful temples, French architecture and monk processions make for great photographic opportunities.Day 8-11 / Vang Vieng - Vientiane Vang Vieng, located on the banks of the Nam Song River and surrounded by stunning limestone cliffs, is our next relaxed stop. Further south is Vientiane. Take a walking tour of the charming capital and visit some of the Buddhist temples.Day 12-14 / Siem Reap - Angkor We fly to Siem Reap in Cambodia, where we explore the town before driving out to the Angkor Wat complex and watch the sunset from Phnom Bakheng. Spend the next two days exploring the Angkor temples, the first day with a local guide, the following on your own at your own pace.Day 15-17 / Phnom Penh The former Tuol Sleng Prison and the Killing Fields are sobering reminders of the Khmer Rouge era. After visiting these sites, spend your free time visiting the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, Wat Phnom or the fascinating streets.
