The following morning we meet our local guide for a tour of the city before boarding the overnight sleeper train for Chiang Mai.Day 3 / Chiang Mai Free time is set aside to explore Chiang Mai's many temples, appreciate the scenic view from Doi Suthep or join a Thai cooking class. In the evening, explore the fantastic Night Bazaar and hunt for bargains.Day 4 / Huay Xai Travelling through picturesque countryside and rural farming communities, we progress through northern Thailand and cross the mighty Mekong River into Laos. Huay Xai, a small riverside town, is a great place to chill out.Day 5 / Mekong River - Pakbeng Travel slowly down the Mekong and sit back to watch life unfold along the river. In the late afternoon we arrive at the small village of Pakbeng, where we stay in a lovely guesthouse.Day 6-8 / Luang Prabang We board another slow boat for a ride down river to Luang Prabang, breaking our journey to explore the peaceful Buddhist temple caves at Pak Ou. While in Luang Prabang we explore the many beautiful temples and admire the French architecture.Day 9-10 / Vang Vieng We travel through the spectacular mountain scenery of Laos, passing Lao and other villages, as we travel to Vang Vieng, located on the banks of the Nam Song River and surrounded by stunning lime karst cliffs.Day 11-12 / Vientiane Enjoy a free day to explore the charming capital of Laos - a trip out to the Buddha Park is well worthwhile.Day 13-14 / Lak Sao - Vinh The mountain scenery is stunning as we travel by local bus to the town of Lak Sao, on the Vietnamese border. Crossing through rural Vietnam to the port city of Vinh, we board the Reunification Express sleeper train for the journey to Hanoi.Day 15 / Hanoi Hanoi has a charm of its own, with its French colonial architecture and tree-lined boulevards. We enjoy a city tour, visiting such historic sights as the One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature and Hoa Lo Prison, the infamous 'Hanoi Hilton'.Day 16 / Hanoi Our overland journey finishes after breakfast today.Beyond the Mekong 16 daysAn exciting journey through Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.From Bangkok, travel through Laos along the Mekong River to the former royal city of Luang Prabang, picturesque Vang Vieng and the sleepy capital of Vientiane. After travelling through the narrow waterways and towering limestone caves, we arrive at Koh Panyi, where we spend a night as guests of a local family.Day 5-6 / Ao Nang The next stage of our adventure unfolds at beautiful Ao Nang near Krabi. Choose between cave exploring, sea kayaking, diving, rock climbing, swimming or just some good old-fashioned 'R&R' in this hidden tropical paradise.Day 7-8 / Penang We make an early start for the journey to Malaysia, where our first destination is the island state of Penang. The following day we enjoy a walking tour of Georgetown, discovering the colourful markets, old temples and winding streets of the island's main city.Day 9-10 / Cameron Highlands Leaving the hot coastal lowlands, we head south to the Cameron Highlands and the hill station of Tanah Rata. Explore the surrounding mountain trails and visit lush green tea plantations.Day 11 / Kuala Lumpur A mixture of the old and new, KL has strong Indian, Malay and Chinese influences, and contains some of the finest markets and restaurants in South East Asia. Our leader will share his local knowledge on a walking tour of the city.Day 12 / Malaca The Portuguese, Dutch and British have all left their mark on this historic town. We can walk, cycle or sit back in a rickshaw to explore the intriguing Chinese side streets dotted with reminders of a rich colonial past.Day 13-14 / Singapore We head to the Straits of Johore and cross to the island nation of Singapore.
