Two millennia old and amazingly preserved, it's an unforgettable day exploring the temples, theatres and columns. Ancient ruins, underground towns, white-washed medinas, bloody battle sites and camel treks. This trip rolls together the top sights and beautiful vistas from the Nile Delta to the Tunisian Coast.Trip InfoDeparture DatesDay 1 / Cairo Our trip starts in Cairo - no activities are planned for Day 1 so you may arrive at any time. Day 2-3 / Alexandria In Alexandria we visit the Alexandria Museum and the extensive Roman Catacombs. The rest of our time is free to explore and there's time for an optional side-trip to El Alamein. Day 4 / Marsa Matruh We travel today, following the picturesque north African coast, to Marsa Matruh. Day 5-6 / Tobruk - Apolonia Crossing the border into Libya, we visit Tobruk, another important WWII site. We'll also explore the coastal ruins of Apollonia. Day 7 / Cyrene - Qasr Libya - Benghazi A short drive brings us to Cyrene - a Libyan must see. Later we visit Qasr Libya, home to some very well-preserved Byzantine mosaics. We continue to Benghazi, where we explore the old city. Day 8-9 / Sirt - Zliten - Leptis Magna We head along the coast, through Sirt to Zliten. This is our base for exploring Leptis Magna. We spend most of the day exploring this amazing site. In the afternoon, we continue our journey to Tripoli. Day 10-11 / Tripoli - Sabratha The medina in Tripoli is a great place to explore the fascinating bazaars and historic buildings. The following day we travel to Sabratha, then cross the border into Tunisia, where we spend the evening in an authentic Troglodyte house. Day 12-14 / Matmata - Kairouan After checking out the bazaar at Douz, we ride camels into the spectacular desert, then spend the evening with a local family. The next day we explore the medina before spending the night in Kairouan. Day 15-16 / Tunis In Tunis we have a full day to discover the old whitewashed medina with its atmospheric souqs and splendid old mosque. Our adventure comes to an end the following morning. Day 2 / Casablanca - Meknes See the impressive Mosque of Hassan II before taking the train to Meknes. A local guide shows us through the beautiful old medina and we visit the lovely Medresse Bou Inania. Day 3-4 / Fes We continue by train to Fes, an atmospheric city full of exotic fretwork, slants of light and shadows. We enjoy a half-day guided tour of the old city and the rest of our time is free to explore the winding streets, crowded bazaars, historic houses and ancient dye pits. Day 5-6 / Midelt - Merzouga - Erg Chebbi Midelt is in a beautiful setting, and is a fantastic place to enjoy an afternoon walk. The next morning we drive to Merzouga and on to Erg Chebbi, where we spend the night in a simple desert camp and enjoy a camel ride. Day 7-8 / Todra Gorge - Dades Valey - Ait Benhadou We head to Todra Gorge. Mud brick kasbahs, green palm groves and fields, and deep, colourful gorges make this area truly spectacular. We enjoy scenic walks, and discover Morocco's most famous kasbah at Ait Benhaddou. Day 9 / High Atlas - Marrakech We visit the crumbling mud-brick citadel at Telouet and enjoy spectacular views of the High Atlas as we cross Tizi 'n Tichka pass (2260m) on our way to Marrakech, which we reach in the late afternoon. Day 10-11 / Marrakech In Marrakech we enjoy an orientation walk and in the evening we visit the incredible main square (Jemaa el Fna) to watch fire-eaters, snake-charmers and storytellers. Our trip ends the following morning. Additional accommodation is available in Marrakech on request.
