6 visit discover-the-world.co.uk/northernlights Activities & ExcursionsA winter break is a great opportunity to take time out and try your hand at some unusual and often exhilarating activities. Each location we feature presents different opportunities to help you explore your scenic surrounds, with several designed specifically to aid in your pursuit of the northern lights.Sweden & Finland By far the most popular activity here is husky sledging. Whether mushing a dog team of your own, or letting someone else take the reins, a husky trip is not to be missed. It might also be possible to visit a husky farm to see these remarkable dogs and their pups but you won't be allowed to bring any home! Choose between a short excursion or a full-on safari. Reindeer and moose safaris are available too, generally including a taste of traditional food around a campfire in a Sami lavvu or tent. For those wanting a real adrenalin rush, try ice driving in Sweden around a specially designed track. Hone your driving skills under the supervision of a skilled instructor then head out onto the track and test the car and your abilities at up to 100km/hr - exhilarating! Snowmobiling is another hugely popular pastime in both destinations and you'll feel like a local as you whiz through a Christmas-card landscape. In Sweden ice sculpting will surprise and delight. Whilst in Finland, skiing and cross-country skiing are other popular pastimes - end the day with a sauna for that authentic Finnish experience.Norway Our holidays here are mainly ship-based therefore shore excursions are the order of the day. Discover some wonderful coastal cities and picturesque fishing villages such as Kongsfjord and Kirkenes, stunning fjord scenery and more besides.Iceland With wild, natural wonders to discover by day and the lights to search for at night, this is a winter destination with much to offer. Why not try something distinctly Icelandic and traverse the rugged landscape in a monster of a superjeep. A driver/guide will put the vehicle through its paces whilst taking in some truly dramatic scenery - tremendous fun. And you cannot leave Iceland without a dip in the milky-blue waters of the Blue Lagoon - a geothermal wonder set in a jet black lavascape. Riding a pure bred Icelandic horse is another popular pastime. Take a look at our holidays online and view optional activities and excursions specific to each. "Standing on the runners and tightening my grip on the crossbar, l glance at six pairs of eyes willing me to go, only then would their barking stop. Reins straining, I step off the brake. Rushing through the forest under snow-laden branches then across sparkling frozen rivers, my scarf could barely conceal my excitement - husky sledging is the only way to travel!"talk to the experts 01737 218 804 7 |
