Golden beaches and cliffs of Krabi W ith its palm- fringed beaches and welcoming people, Thailand is a deservedly popular travel destination. There is, however, much more to this charming Buddhist Kingdom than sun and sand, as this exciting adventure holiday will show. After a day's sightseeing in bustling Bangkok, we take the sleeper train north to Chiang Mai, a city of 300 temples and an unmissable night market. Trekking and riding on elephant- back, we visit a number of hilltribe villages in this area, staying overnight in a village house. We then follow the ' Sky Road' through dramatic mountain scenery to Um Phang, close to the Burmese border. Here, within a unique landscape of jungle- clad crags and amazing multi- tiered waterfalls, we follow forest trails and use inflatable rafts as we journey between the isolated villages of the Karen people. Sepilok Orang- Utan Sanctuary T his great adventure starts out with a visit to the Mulu National Park, deep within the rainforest of north- eastern Sarawak. Trekking on jungle trails and travelling by longboat on the many rivers, we explore some of the world's largest caves and climb above the forest canopy to a spectacular viewpoint amongst soaring limestone pinnacles. We then trek northwards on the ' Headhunters Trail', stopping off at the villages and longhouses of the Iban people. From Kota Kinabalu in the adjacent state of Sabah, a short flight takes us to Sandakan, where we visit the orang- utan sanctuary at Sepilok and enjoy 2 nights at a jungle lodge on the Kinabatang River in an area rich in wildlife. Returning via the hot springs at Poring to the foot of Kinabalu ( 4101m), we make a 2- day ascent of this challenging peak whose bare upper slopes command memorable views across the South China Sea to the Philippines. The Yoshida Fire Festival S tarting out in Kyoto, our programme includes a visit to the Imperial Palace and a walk through the famous geisha district of Gion for an evening of traditional Japanese entertainment. Then, after a refreshing day of sawanobori, the Japanese version of ghyll-scrambling, we will travel by ' bullet train' to the magnificent White Egret Castle in Himeji. At nearby Kobe, we will visit an aikido centre or dojo and take a beginner's lesson in this traditional and non- aggressive martial art. Transferring to the Japanese Alps, we will hike to the top of Nishihodoppyo Peak ( 2701m) for some spectacular mountain views, before continuing our journey to the lakeside resort town of Kawaguchiko. Here, we will attend one of the country's biggest fire festivals and also have plenty of opportunity to enjoy views of majestic Mount Fuji ( 3776m).
