Aztec and Spanish colonial history H igh above its tropical forests, Aztec ruins and Spanish colonial architecture, there is a side to Mexico that few people get to see - amongst the ice and snow of its 5000 metre volcanoes. We first climb Nevado de Toluca, whose summit crater has 2 lagoons - called the ' sun' and the ' moon'. Then, over 3 days, we tackle Iztaccihuatl (' Izta') ( 5260m), following a beautiful route known as the ' Ridge of the Sun'. From the top, there are superb views across to Popocatepetl ( a popular climb - until its recent eruptions). Two nights at a comfortable hacienda in the village of Amecameca then set us up for the final ascent, on Pico de Orizaba ( 5746m). After climbing the 30 degree snow slope of the Glaciar de Jamapa and tracing a route around the crater rim, our reward is a summit with splendid views across to the Gulf of Mexico. 1800 metre deep Batopilas Canyon S everal deeply- cut valleys combine to form the Copper Canyon, which is a part of the Sierra Madre in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. At the heart of this rugged region, the silver mines at Batopilas ( begun by the Spanish in the early 18th century) were accessed via a 100- mile trail from the town of Carachic. Although still used by the indigenous Tarahumara Indians, a reclusive people famed for their long distance running exploits, this trail has now all but disappeared. Long- forgotten, this ' Silver Trail' provides the basis of our 9- day trek through this vast and almost roadless area. With mule support, we hike across forested ridges, climb to high mesas and drop into deep gorges, stopping off at isolated Indian settlements, riverside camps and welcome hot springs. Spot the Alaskan ' Big Five'
Raft the Tokositna River T he focus of this sensational Alaskan experience is the stunning Mount McKinley ( 6194m), also known by its Athabascan Indian name of ' Denali'. Lying just a half- day drive north of Anchorage, our introduction to North America's highest peak is the excellent park service excursion to the Eielson Visitor Center. This provides us with fantastic mountain views and also gives us a first chance to spot the Alaskan ' Big Five' of moose, caribou, dall sheep, wolf and grizzly bear. Heading off into the wild, we then have 2 nights at an Austrian- style mountain hut beside Kroto Lake, before hiking for 2 days through bush and tundra to reach the Tokositna River - with views of the snowy bulk of McKinley throughout. Meeting up with our rafts ( flown in to meet us), we make a 3- day descent of the river to Talkeetna, with wild riverside camping and lots of opportunities for fishing and wildlife spotting en route.
