Our approach to this so- called ' Cradle of Gold' is by way of the awe- inspiring canyon of the Apurimac River, which involves a descent and ascent of almost 2000 metres. We then have a day to explore the site, before setting off on trek through the rugged Cordillera Vilcabamba, accompanied by our team of arrieros and their mules. Crossing a series of high passes, including the Totora Pass ( 4500m), we enjoy superb trekking and spectacular views of the peaks such as Salcantay ( 6271m), Pumasillo and Choquetecarpo. Following forgotten Inca trails, via several interesting ruins and an ancient silver mine, we pass through untouched Andean villages whose Quechua inhabitants still wear traditional dress. Finally descending into the cloud forest cloaked valley of the Rio Urubamba, we have amazing views of Machu Picchu from the back. After a night in Aguas Calientes, this great trip concludes with a guided tour of the Inca citadel and a welcome free day in Cusco. 5 NIGHTS HOTELS AND LODGES, 8 NIGHTS CAMPING, 8 DAYS DEMANDING TREKKING, MAX ALTITUDE - 4500M.
