After a night in Chamonix, we drive across the border to beautiful Valgrisenche, to begin our 6 days of high- level trekking and easy climbing. This wonderful mountain area was Italy's first national park and comprises high snow- capped mountain peaks, deep valleys, glacial lakes, wide Alpine flowering meadows and forests of larch and fir. In addition, it is a tranquil area, largely free of tourist development and home to wildlife such as ibex, chamois and marmot. Each night we stay in a different mountain refuge and enjoy good food and Italian hospitality. Acclimatisation and fitness is built up during the first few days of the trip, as we cross 3000 metre passes and trek to 2 straightforward viewpoint summits, Becca della Traversiere ( 3334m) and Punta Basei ( 3388m). Finally, from the Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele, we make the classic, easy snow face and rocky ridge ascent to the summit of Gran Paradiso ( 4061m), where the views extend northwards to prominent Mont Blanc. A perfect trip for anyone looking to make a first Alpine ascent! Konkordia and the Aletsch Glacier A high- level traverse of Switzerland's Bernese Oberland Cross Europe's biggest glacial system Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau Ascent of Abeni Flue C lose to the picturesque Swiss ski town of Grindelwald, the Bernese Oberland is one of the most impressive mountain groups in the Alps. This adventurous trek makes a high- level traverse of the range, amongst a collection of dramatic peaks which includes the famous trilogy of Eiger ( 3970m), Monch ( 4099m) and Jungfrau ( 4158m). En route, we negotiate high and rugged terrain including the Aletsch glacial system which has its heart at the junction of glaciers known as Konkordia. Crossing several airy mountain passes and overnighting in spectacularly situated refuges, we also make an ascent to the snow- capped summit of Abeni Flue ( 3962m). From this high vantage point, the panorama includes the Matterhorn, distant Mont Blanc and the stunning pyramidal peak of the Finsteraarhorn ( 4274m), the highest summit in the Oberland. This is an excellent introduction to glacier travel and easy Alpine peaks. 8 NIGHTS HOTELS AND REFUGES, 7 DAYS DEMANDING TREKKING AND EASY CLIMBING, MAX. ALTITUDE - 3962M.
