Beautiful Lake Bled S traddling northern Italy and Slovenia, the limestone massif of the Julian Alps is at its wildest and most impressive in the Triglav National Park. Here, amongst spectacularly rugged peaks, we have devised an excellent walking holiday that involves lightweight backpacking between well- equipped mountain huts. From the lakeside town of Bled, we begin with an ascent of Crn Prst ( 1844m) overlooking Lake Bohinj. Maintaining our height, we spend the next 3 days on a wonderful ridge, traversing 2000 metre peaks, high above lush Alpine valleys. A more gentle day in the ' valley of the 7 lakes', leads to the foot of Slovenia's highest mountain, the spectacular triple- summited Triglav ( 2864m). The climb to the top is airy, with some scrambling and sections of fixed cable - but the view is described by Baedeker as ". one of the most sublime among the Alps." Superbly situated refuge at Skogadalsboen K nown in Norse mythology as the Land of the Giants, the Jotunheimen is the biggest and most impressive mountain region in Norway. With a network of good paths and excellent mountain huts, this is a superb area for trekking amongst dramatic peaks and glaciers. After a transfer from Oslo, our first hike is an acknowledged classic, following the airy Besseggen Ridge which divides two lakes, one blue, one green. We then make the long and exciting crossing of the crevassed Memuru/ Hellstugu Glacier to reach Spiterstulen, our base for the next 3 nights. On consecutive days, we hike to the summits of Galdhopiggen ( 2469m) and Glittertind ( 2472m), contenders for the title of Norway's biggest peak. Trekking out westwards, through some of the wildest Jotunheimen landscapes, we overnight in splendidly located refuges and old farmsteads, finally descending to the roadhead via the magnificent valley of Utladalen with its 200 metre- high waterfall. This is Norway's finest trekking holiday! TREK - 9 DAYS S ituated 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, the ' King's Trail' or ' Kungsleden' is one of Europe's wildest and most remote treks. In summer, the approach to Kebnekaise ( 2117m) Sweden's highest mountain, crosses an unspoiled land of flower- carpeted birch forest and spectacular glacial valleys where the indigenous Sami people tend their herds of reindeer. Starting out alongside the Abisko River, we trek to the wonderful viewpoint of the Tätja Pass ( 1100m) and continue via the impressive waterfalls of the Tjäktjajakka Valley. Carrying light backpacks, we overnight at a series of comfortable mountain huts, some of which even have saunas. On reaching the Kebnekaise Mountain Station, we have time for a glacier trek and for the ascent to the exposed and snowy summit of Sweden's highest peak.
