Download detailed trip dossiers at keadventure. comMongolia 65 Mount Khuiten The world's most remote peak Khuiten, Mongolia's highest peak Climbing in the land of Genghis Khan At Nairandal's summit, Mongolia China and Russia meet O ne of the least accessible mountain ranges on earth, Mongolia's Altai Tavan Bogd ( Five Holy Peaks) lie on the border with both Russia and China, almost 2000 kilometres west of Ulaanbaatar. After sightseeing in the Mongolian capital and enjoying a day's preparatory hiking in the nearby Bogdkhan National Park, we continue our journey to the remote Kazakh province of Bayan Olgii. Trekking in to basecamp, assisted by camels and their drivers, there is the opportunity to meet and take tea with nomadic herders at their traditional ger encampments. Starting out with the straightforward ascent of Malchin ( 4037m), we gain dramatic views of the Potaniin Glacier and of our subsequent climbing objectives; the steep and challenging Mount Khuiten ( 4374m) and the easier, non- technical snow dome of Nairandal ( 4082m). More than just a superb climbing expedition, this is also a fascinating travel experience in a rarely- visited corner of the world. 5 NIGHTS HOTELS, 9 NIGHTS CAMPING, 6 DAYS DEMANDING TREKKING, 1 DAY EASY CLIMBING, 1 DAY DEMANDING CLIMBING, MAX. Its wealth of magnificent wildlife - wolf, bear and eagle - is matched only by the splendour of its volcanic landscape. After a tough ascent of Avachinsky ( 2748m), we drive north to the Klyuchevskaya chain of volcanoes, setting up our camp at the old Lunar Base ( where Russia tested its Moon landing vehicles). Here, we explore lava fields and volcanic cones and also climb to the top of the active Plosky Tolbachik ( 3085m), where the views include the striking, conical Klyuchevskoy ( 4750m). Returning to the area just south of Petropavlovsk, we have the chance to see hot springs, steaming fumaroles and lakes of boiling mud and sulphuric acid, as we climb Mutnovsky and then Gorely, with its 11 craters. With outlandish scenery, as well as great cultural and historical interest, Kamchatka is a revelation. TREK - 16 DAYS R ising out of the Siberian ' taiga' in the Russian far east, the Tcherskiy Mountains present a final upthrust of high ground, beyond which lie the frozen lands of the Chukchi people and the Bering Strait. Travelling by way of Yakutsk to the isolated gold mining settlement of Ust- Nera, we complete an outlandish, self- supported 200 kilometre trek through these ranges - following river valleys, crossing low passes and possibly including easy summits such as Kisyl Tass ( 2230m). Accompanied by Yakut rangers and packhorses, we will live in part off the land, catching game and fishing. Then, from Sasyr, a trapping and reindeer herding village ' at the end of the earth', we complete this magnificent journey with a 6- day descent in open canoes of the meandering Moma River. This is the experience of a lifetime, a chance to explore one of the world's wildest wilderness areas - home to the shamanistic Yakuts and to animal species such as wolf and bear.
