66 Siberia Talk to an adventure expert on017687 73966 Kamchatka Land of Ice and Fire Volcano trekking at the end of the world Climb 4 contrasting volcanoes Superb views from Plosky Tolbachik Fantastic wildlife spotting T wice as big as the UK and with a population of just half a million people, the Kamchatka peninsula is one of the world's most important wilderness areas. Its wealth of magnificent wildlife - wolf, bear and eagle - is matched only by the splendour of its volcanic landscape. After a tough ascent of Avachinsky ( 2748m), we drive north to the Klyuchevskaya chain of volcanoes, setting up our camp at the old Lunar Base ( where Russia tested its Moon landing vehicles). Here, we explore lava fields and volcanic cones and also climb to the top of the active Plosky Tolbachik ( 3085m), where the views include the striking, conical Klyuchevskoy ( 4750m). Returning to the area just south of Petropavlovsk, we have the chance to see hot springs, steaming fumaroles and lakes of boiling mud and sulphuric acid, as we climb Mutnovsky and then Gorely, with its 11 craters. With outlandish scenery, as well as great cultural and historical interest, Kamchatka is a revelation. TREK - 16 DAYS R ising out of the Siberian ' taiga' in the Russian far east, the Tcherskiy Mountains present a final upthrust of high ground, beyond which lie the frozen lands of the Chukchi people and the Bering Strait. Travelling by way of Yakutsk to the isolated gold mining settlement of Ust- Nera, we complete an outlandish, self- supported 200 kilometre trek through these ranges - following river valleys, crossing low passes and possibly including easy summits such as Kisyl Tass ( 2230m). Accompanied by Yakut rangers and packhorses, we will live in part off the land, catching game and fishing. Then, from Sasyr, a trapping and reindeer herding village ' at the end of the earth', we complete this magnificent journey with a 6- day descent in open canoes of the meandering Moma River. This is the experience of a lifetime, a chance to explore one of the world's wildest wilderness areas - home to the shamanistic Yakuts and to animal species such as wolf and bear. Close to the Mongolian border and surrounded by rugged mountains, this area is home to numerous endemic animal species ( including freshwater seals) and also has a diverse cultural mix - native Sayats still herd reindeer here and the Buryat people maintain many of their old traditions. From Irkutsk, we travel by boat to Peschanaya Bay, to begin a 5- day trek along the margin of the lake, climbing to cross low passes and visiting isolated fishing villages. Returning to Irkutsk by hydrofoil, we travel to the Khamar- Daban peaks at the western tip of Baikal. Here, this sensational adventure concludes with a 3- day trek via the summit of Cherskiy Peak ( 2588m), where the views include the snow- capped summits of the Sayan Mountains to the west and the great expanse of Lake Baikal to the east. 4 NIGHTS HOTELS AND LODGES, 9 NIGHTS CAMPING, 9 DAYS MODERATE TREKKING, MAX. During the harsh Siberian winter the lake becomes entirely frozen over, with crystal clear ice allowing visibility down to 40 metres in places. This exciting itinerary explores the sparkling winter world of Lake Baikal from its shores to the central islands, travelling on foot, by snowmobile, by dogsled, on skis and even on an ice hovercraft - for maximum adventure. Along the way we have a 2- day visit to Olkhon Island, the summer home of the shamanistic Buryats, enjoy traditional ' banya' or steam saunas, meet the local people and also try our hand at ice fishing. This fantastic multi- activity adventure in an altogether stunning part of the world is the antidote to ordinary holidays.
