Mystical Paro Valley E ast of Kangchenjunga, the Himalayan ranges extend through the former kingdom of Sikkim into the adjacent territory of Bhutan. Home to some of the world's finest mountain scenery, this fascinating region is the focus of a splendid 3- week holiday which combines 2 short treks and the chance to visit many historic towns, temples and monasteries. From the spectacularly located hill- station of Darjeeling, we walk for 6 days on the Singalila Ridge and enjoy tremendous views of Everest, Makalu and Kangchenjunga. We then travel to the atmospheric bazaar town of Kalimpong, before continuing our journey across the border into Bhutan. After a day's sightseeing in the enchantingly peaceful Paro Valley, we set off on the delightful 6- day trek to Chomolhari and the dramatic mountain scenery of west Bhutan. This is a wonderfully varied adventure in a part of the world which is relatively little- visited. S traddling the districts of Garhwal and Kumaon, close to the Nepalese border, Nanda Devi ( 7817m) is the geographical and spiritual high point of India. After sightseeing in Delhi, our journey to this sacred mountain begins on the night train to Kathgodam and continues by road to the village of Song. Trekking from the valley of the Ram Ganga to finally reach the Gauri Ganga in the east, our route is rich in interest, passing through a delightfully scenic and unspoiled corner of the Indian Himalaya. Traversing alpine meadows and crossing high passes, we have panoramic views of the clustered peaks of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary and of the adjacent Panch Chuli group. Visits to several villages and shepherds' camps provide a wealth of cultural interest and help to make this a wholly memorable trekking holiday in an area visited by few adventure travellers. Free morning in McLeodganj F rom Manali in the Kulu Valley, this adventurous trek heads west into the mountains of the Pir Panjal, a remote and little-visited area that is home to nomadic Gaddi shepherds during the summer months. Trekking through untouched forest and upland meadows, we climb to cross the spectacular Kaliheni La ( 4710m) where the views extend to glaciers and snow- capped peaks in all directions. Beyond this pass, we trek for 2 days in a beautiful hidden valley, losing height steadily en route to the isolated village of Bara Bhangal. After a rest day, it's up again, following good shepherds trails to eventually reach the moraine, snow and ice of the Thamser Pass ( 4930m). Here, we cross the watershed of the Dhaula Dhar range and begin our long descent into the Kangra Valley.
