Awe- inspiring flight out of Lukla U ntil the airstrip was built at Lukla in 1964, all treks into the Khumbu passed through the village of Jiri ( 1905m) in the Dolkha region of east Nepal. It is an 8- day trek from here to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, on a trail which has been beautifully quiet for decades. Starting out at modest altitude, this gem of a trek accumulates lots of up and down as it heads eastwards across the grain of the country, crossing a succession of rivers and forested ridges. With its picturesque terraced fields, charming villages, colourful monasteries and friendly people, this route provides an unforgettable taste of Nepal's unspoiled Himalayan foothills. Finally reaching the Khumbu, we are rewarded by inspiring views of snow- capped peaks such as Ama Dablam and Everest itself. For the first week, it's a real roller- coaster, as we trek between the remote valleys of the Solu Khumbu and set up our camp each night at peaceful Sherpa villages. Reaching the Dudh Kosi River, we head north to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to one of the most remarkable mountain landscapes on earth. Fit and acclimatised after our long approach, we can enjoy all of the sights of the high Khumbu, as our trek continues through the monastery village of Thyangboche and on towards Everest.
