Kathmandu sightseeing T his short holiday includes some of the best and most scenic hiking in the vicinity of Nepal's 2 principal cities, Kathmandu and Pokhara. After a day of sightseeing amongst the temples of the capital city and in nearby Bhaktapur, we head up to Nagarkot on the northern rim of the Kathmandu Valley. From here, we have an easy 2 days of walking to Sundarijal, with superb views of an array of Himalayan peaks, including distant Mount Everest. We then transfer to Pokhara, in preparation for our 4- day foothills trek, which leads through villages, pretty farmland and shading forest. The setting for Eric Valli's superb film - Himalaya H idden behind high passes, Inner Dolpo is one of the least accessible and yet most alluring corners of Nepal. Few travellers have penetrated to the heart of Dolpo, a region beautifully portrayed in Eric Valli's excellent film - ' Himalaya'. This is very much the land that time forgot, with a mix of ancient Tibetan religions and a hardy people who make their living through farming and through trade with both Tibet and Nepal. From the remote airstrip at Juphal, our route takes us to the jewel- like Phoksumdo Lake and then across the Kang La ( 5375m) to Shey Gompa and Crystal Mountain, the spiritual centre of the region. Crossing further passes to the far- flung settlement of Saldang and descending via the lovely Tarap Valley, our circuit trek follows excellent trails and offers superb mountain views. Kyanjin to Kathmandu flight N orth of Kathmandu ( its peaks visible from the Nepalese capital on a clear day) the Langtang Himal is known for its brilliant trekking and spectacular landscapes. After a short drive to the village of Sundarijal, our approach to this unspoiled region involves a week of trekking through the district of Helambu. Following the airy crest of the Thare Danda, we cross the Laurebina La ( 4600m) to the sacred lakes at Gosainkund and enjoy fantastic views of the peaks of the Rolwaling and distant Khumbu. From Syabru, we then hike to the heart of Langtang at the monastery village of Kyanjin and have the option to trek to the summit of Tsergo Ri ( 4984m) for views that include the 8000 metre peak Shisha Pangma. Flying back to Kathmandu from the STOL airstrip at Kyanjin provides a most exciting finale.
