BARBADOS IS A LITTLE ' GREENER' after Divi Southwinds Beach Resort was certifi ed as a Green Hotel – the fi rst property on the island to receive the designation. Among the changes implemented are the elimination of polystyrene foam, an increase in recycling, installation of low- fl ow toilets and showers, and garden waste being used as compost. The hotel has also reduced the level of harmful chemicals being released into the ocean. Divi Resorts president, E. J. Schanfarber, says the hotel's clients are increasingly attuned to the health of the planet and many are basing their hotel selection on environmental standards. Spice of life TREE PLANTING WORKS Grenada, known as the Isle of Spice, is embarking on a tree planting project that will result in various spice producing trees being established in prominent areas as a form of tourist attraction. The trees will include nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and bay leaf. At present, these trees, which are responsible for millions in revenue, are usually found in the forest or on farms. The hope is that this will help promote the island as a ' green destination'. Scheduled for 2009, it will incorporate solar heating and indigenous materials into the construction process. The expectation is that all tours and activities will be entirely mandated to the local Kalinago people. hours to attract mates or to challenge other would- be suitors. Humpbacks are by far the major attraction, but Sperm and Pilot whales can both be viewed, as well as a variety of dolphins. Whale watch boats must adhere to strict government guidelines to ensure the whales are respected in their natural habitat. No one knows how long the whales have been visiting this area, but cave paintings found in Samana, which date from the Taino period, suggest the mammals have been visiting the region for at least 15 centuries prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492.
