I would like to welcome you to our place of comfort and sharing and especially if you are reading this magazine for the first time. I hope that it provides you with information, comfort or support. Sadly we have some more families just starting off on this journey of loss and we offer our heartfelt condolences to you. Many making contact through our new website and hopefully able to find immediate help and valuable information. For many other families your journey continues. Our new name has come about for many reasons but mainly to encompass the areas that we now represent. We wanted to place more importance on our baby's short lives rather than their death. Many parents are now making contact with us before their baby's death and it seems unfair that our name suggests 'after care' rather than 'immediate care and support'.A Little LifetimeFoundationFormerly ISANDS - founded 1983I did not die young, I lived my span of life ...Within your body, And within your love. There are many, Who have lived long lives... And have not been loved as me. If you would honour me ... Then speak my name, And number me among your family. If you would honour me ... Then strive to live in love, For in that love, I live.Christy Kenneally moments2 Originally when the charity was formed the name ISANDS was always supposed to be a temporary name and was based on SANDS groups elsewhere. It has taken us 27 years to make the change. But we feel that now is the right time as the charity has expanded to cover many areas of care that Stillbirth & Neonatal Death exclude. It has never felt comfortable for me to describe the charity as a Death Society and I think A Little Lifetime Foundation is more user friendly and welcoming. It also gives us a wider scope to develop our services in the future and opens up other avenues for funding and support. We decided to use A Little Lifetime Foundation based on our parent book A Little Lifetime which is well known and associated with us already. This will take a little time for all of us to get used to, especially those of us associated with ISANDS for a long time but I hope that we can all adjust and make it our own and what we need it to be.Teddy has also been given a name and will now be known as 'ALLF' and you know what that stands for!!! Seems right to give him a name and we hope to use him more in the future for children's projects etc.In this edition we also include information about our Services/Blessing of Remembrance past and future and hope that you can join us for some special Time to Remember. Like each edition of moments one of the most valued contributions is that of our guest writers, mainly bereaved parents and families. They have shared their thoughts and experiences in stories and poems and we are very grateful to them for that. We also include fundraising events, pictures and donations received. Hopefully there is something for each reader. Since our last edition of Moments we are now on Facebook and Twitter and have friends joining in from Ireland, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Spain, Belgium, Canada, France, Thailand, and Turkey. It is lovely to see the wider community being made aware of A Little Lifetime Foundation and the needs of parents and families. The new Discussion Forum on our website www.isands.ie has been a huge success, offering space to parents and families to communicate with each other when ever they need to. It is sad but good to see more and more joining in on a wide variety of discussions. The website itself has had almost two and a quarter million hits in one year. We hope to develop the website even more over the next year. We are also mindful that not everyone has access to a computer and the forum so our old ways of communicating, chatting on the phone and meeting parents is still hugely important and we hope to develop ways of making the charity more accessible for everyone in the future.I would like to say how grateful I am to have wonderful people who do what they do each day for this charity - the Members of the National Executive and the Support Team. Thank you for your continued dedication to the needs of bereaved families and for your support to me personally. My thanks also to all the other good people who help us do what we do each year- you know who you are and what you mean to us.Take care everyone and you know where we are if you need us.Ron Smith-MurphyNational Chairperson, A Little Lifetime Foundation |
