51 telephone: 0845 330 8579 ( local call rate, UK only) international telephone: + 44 1453 844 400 www. mountainkingdoms. com Grade: Moderate Grade: Moderate A s well as great full and half- day walks in the Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands and Arches National Parks, we follow in the boot steps of John Wayne as we walk amongst the rock monoliths of Monument Valley and explore the tribal lands of the Navajo and Hopi Indians in the company of native guides. Heading west we experience the Grand Canyon from top to bottom, from the first sight of this breathtaking work of nature at the South Rim, to a supported trek to the canyon floor itself. Here we spend two nights in a lodge and explore the rushing waters that lead to the Colorado River. We rejoin the 21st Century with a drive along Route 66, via the Hoover Dam, back to Las Vegas. A fter time to explore San Francisco, we head inland to the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite National Park. These celebrated landscapes offer magnificent trekking and we enjoy three full days on the trail here, taking in such sights as the peak of Half- Dome and the Yosemite, Vernal and Bridal Veil waterfalls. We may be lucky enough to spot black bear, while mule deer and eagles are frequently seen. With our bags carried by mules, we then head off deep into the mountains. Our trek on the John Muir Trail leads us across Donohue Pass at 3,370m/ 11,056ft to reach Thousand Island Lake and our ultimate goal, Devil's Postpile. The adventure continues with the experience of a night in the heart of Death Valley, before ending amid the bright lights of Las Vegas. F rom Chihuahua, former home of the revolutionary bandit Pancho Villa, we take the famous ' El Chepe' train to reach our trail head on the canyon rim. In the company of our local guide and pack- mules, our first day on trek is spent following the forested canyon rim, before we make a spectacular descent to the semi- tropical landscape and banks of the Rio Urique below. Oranges and avocados grow year round in the bed of the canyon and the lush vegetation supports raccoon, deer, parrots and hummingbirds. The canyon is also home to the Tarahumara Indians and we'll doubtless see children herding goats and fields tilled with wooden ploughs. Our trek ends at Tarahumaran, from where we return to Chihuahua, senses filled to the brim. Grand Canyon Trek The best Wild West trails and a supported trek to the bed of the Grand Canyon. 52 Download holiday itineraries from www. mountainkingdoms. com e: info@ mountainkingdoms. com South America From the Andes to the Amazon and from the Caribbean to Tierra del Fuego, South America encompasses a truly spectacular range of scenery and cultures. The Andes form the spine of the continent and are the highest mountain range outside Asia. Aconcagua, the highest peak, rises to 6,962m/ 22,841ft above sea level while the summit of Mount Chimborazo, in the Ecuadorian Andes, is the point on the Earth's surface most distant from its centre, because of the equatorial bulge. Here in these splendid mountains you will see remnants of ancient civilisations, country people tending their llamas and alpacas, while condors wheel overhead and hummingbirds hover over exotic flowers. Acclimatisation A number of South American cities are situated at fairly high altitudes so we include plenty of time for gentle sightseeing and acclimatisation walks to help you adjust to the altitude. For all our South American treks we include a good pre- trek acclimatisation programme to give you the very best chance of comfortably completing your trek.
