Huaraz, situated 400 km north of Lima, is set between the ranges of the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra. We offer two treks in this region and both start with a couple of days in Huaraz for exploration and essential acclimatisation. More holiday options... Please contact us for details of our four day Machu Picchu extension. T he Huayhuash ( pronounced why- wash) is a compact range of mountains, which includes Yerupaja, Peru's second highest mountain. The dramatic, fluted ice peaks which dominate the range have drawn trekkers and mountaineers for years - including Joe Simpson on his ill- fated climbing expedition made famous through ' Touching the Void'. Leaving the summits to the climbers, we'll enjoy our own challenging high altitude adventure, crossing many passes, often over 4,700m/ 15,500ft, to make the complete circuit. However, with careful acclimatisation around Huaraz before we start and rest days along the way, we'll be able to fully enjoy the spectacular wild and beautiful landscape of towering peaks, deep glacial valleys, and sparkling blue trout filled lakes. We may see huge condors cruise the thermals, while llamas and vicuña graze on open hillsides. T his demanding trek, which crosses high passes over 4,600m/ 15,000ft, begins at the brilliant blue lakes of the Llanganuco valley. From the very start though we are close to the high mountains, with stupendous views of fabulous fluted snow peaks and dramatic glaciers, and the peaks of the high Andes receding into the distance beyond. Along the way we come across the occasional picturesque village, and encounter local people as they graze their sheep on the high mountain slopes. The sound of a shepherd playing his flute in these surroundings is an unforgettable experience. This is an immensely rewarding trek which climaxes beneath the west face of Alpamayo ( 5,947m/ 19,512ft) which, with its pyramid shaped snow summit perched above a high wall of glaciers, is considered by many to be one of the world's most beautiful mountains. The Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit A magnificent remote mountain circuit - one of the world's most stunning treks. Over twelve million years of glacial action has sculpted the Patagonian Andes into fjords, islands and U- shaped valleys. Most dramatic of all though, are the megalithic, vertical rock towers such as the world famous Torres del Paine, Cerro Torre Peak and Mount Fitz Roy. O ur journey begins in Chile's vibrant capital of Santiago, with time to explore and take a walk in the hills above the Maipo Valley. Flying south, we take an awe inspiring boat trip from Puerto Natales right into The Torres del Paine National Park. Our base here is a stunningly located eco- camp, with accommodation provided in comfortable, en suite, geodesic domes. Highlights of our walking here include the Las Torres trail to view the Paine Towers and a walk beside the turquoise waters of Lake Pehoe. Crossing into Argentina we'll visit the Perito Moreno glacier and take treks to Laguna Los Tres, to see the Fitz Roy massif, and to Laguna Torre to watch icebergs glide across the dramatic backdrop of Cerro Torre. Finally we reach Buenos Aires, with time for a tango, before we fly home. F lying into Santiago we have a couple of nights to see the sights and take a walk outside the city before flying on south to Punta Arenas and Patagonia. From the comfort of a fixed camp in the Torres del Paine National Park, our trek begins with a day walk to a viewpoint looking across to the stunning Towers of Paine. Our circumnavigation of the massif then begins, where we will be treated to daily sights of glaciers, rushing rios, granite towers, snow clad summits and turquoise lakes as we walk through a mixture of daisy meadows, lenga forest and moraine. One of the many advantages of this week long trek is its low altitude ( max. height, John Garner Paso, at 1,180m/ 3,871ft) which helps those energy levels! I n Patagonia we base ourselves at top quality hotels and lodges set amidst turquoise lakes, towering mountains and dazzling glaciers. All offer the highest standard of comfort, service and cuisine. During our stay there will be plenty of walking in the beautiful mountains of the Los Glaciares National Park, with electric views of the famous peaks of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. A thrilling boat ride takes us past giant icebergs to the remote wilderness of Estancia Cristina. Here we explore the breathtaking scenery with some superb day walks. Our last day in Patagonia is spent walking on the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the natural wonders of the world.
