Discovery Expeditions awaken curiosity about other cultures, improve individual self-esteem, generate new friendships and, above all, expedition members arrive home with a new found passion for the world in which they live. We understand just how busy today's teachers and youth leaders are, and aim to minimise the time, stress and effort required in organising a trip. We also support them in managing the responsibility associated with leading a group of young people on adventurous activities overseas. A host of state, private and grammar schools have trekked with us over the years in addition to a number of Scout and Air Cadet groups. Recent groups include Chipping Sodbury Scouts, Bryanston School, Worcestershire Girl Guides, Great Sankey High School, Torpoint School and Poltair Community School. Responsible Tourism remains at the very core of everything we do as a tour operator. We feel strongly that all of our holidays should benefit the local communities, protect the environment by minimising pollution and respect local traditions, religion and heritage. We tread lightly - low volume, low impact holidays are the best way of preserving the beautiful and fragile places we visit. Mountain Kingdoms has a top five star rating for sustainable tourism from the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) and is a previous winner of the prestigious annual AITO Responsible Tourism award. We believe that responsible tourism is about more than just policies. It involves giving something tangible back to the communities that we visit. Here are a few examples of our recent and ongoing work:Northpoint School, Nepal Since 2005, Mountain Kingdoms has been working with SHIVA Charity to support Northpoint English School, near Bhaktapur, Nepal. To date we have raised over £10,000 through a host of fundraising activities and client donations. These funds have been used to help with building new classrooms, a walled playground and library, and to purchase nursery class furniture and computers. Porter Welfare In conjunction with Tourism Concern, we have drawn up comprehensive guidelines for porters' rights and working conditions which our agents are obliged to adhere to. The welfare of our local trekking staff is of great importance to us, and we try our best to ensure they have appropriate clothing, shelter and footwear on all our trips. The post-trip questionnaire we send to all clients asks for feedback on the welfare of our trekking staff, and any reported concerns are swiftly acted upon.Simien Mountain Mobile Medical Service The Simien Mountain Mobile Medical Service, set up by a Mountain Kingdoms client, delivers essential medical care at no cost to remote villages in the Simien Mountains. A qualified Ethiopian nurse travels from village to village giving general medical care and providing health education. Mountain Kingdoms donated £600 in 2010 to help establish this project.Ladakh Flood ReliefAs a response to the devastating floods in Ladakh in August 2010, Mountain Kingdoms donated £1,000 to the flood victims through Save the Children. The Bridge Project, ZanskarInitiated by Mountain Kingdoms MD, Steve Berry, this unique project is raising money to build rare Zanskari bridges of interwoven twigs, with the aim of keeping ancient Zanskari traditions and culture alive. Over £3,000 has been raised to date through generous donations. Carbon Offsetting Working with the Tourism Industry Carbon Offset Service (TICOS) we offset the carbon emissions for every Mountain Kingdoms holiday that includes a flight, as well as for staff and trek leader flights. TICOS is an industry-wide programme supported by international agencies such as UNESCO and bodies such as AITO. Since 2009 we have raised £7,000 for TICOS, with money primarily being allocated to the Druk White Lotus School in Ladakh, a charity we have worked with for many years. Other charities supported by Mountain Kingdoms ? Dental Project, Peru ? The LATA Foundation ? Druk White Lotus School, Leh, Ladakh ? The Michael Aris Memorial Trust, Tibet ? The Tibet Foundation ? The Bhutan Society of the United Kingdom ? Jimmy Roberts Memorial Fund, Nepal ? Everest Memorial Trust, Nepal ? The Gurkha Welfare Trust ? Global Action Network ? The Nepali Children's Trust ? KINOE ? Sir Edmund Hillary's Himalayan Trust ? Ginette Harrison Memorial Fund ? Village Education Project KilimanjaroIf you would like to find out more about any of these projects, please contact our Responsible Tourism Manager, Niki Morgan: niki@mountainkingdoms.com.An increasing number of our trips are now organised in conjunction with local community projects. Trekking holidays are known for offering a great insight into everyday life and culture but these special holidays bring you as close as possible to local people and maximise the benefit your holiday will bring to their community:? The Treasure Discoverer's Trek - the Nabji Trail, Bhutan Page 17. A unique trip, where a different village each day provides a guide, porters and food for the trek. We pay the villages direct for these services, ensuring the money goes back to the community.? Hidden Village Trek, Langtang, Nepal Page 36. Spend a few days in a rural Himalayan village and take part in activities in the fields and local homes, or simply observe everyday life. This holiday includes a $200 donation to a charity supporting education, healthcare, and cultural heritage in the village in which you stay.? Mekong and Minorities Eco Trek, Laos Page 50. On this trek we stay in simple lodges or village houses and enjoy meals prepared by local families - porters, guides, food and accommodation are all organised by the villagers. The money goes directly to the communities through which we pass.? Egypt & the Summits of Sinai Page 64. Through the local guides who lead us to our restored 'garden' campsites we experience and support a sustainable tourism project for the Jabaliyya Bedouin.Further information on these holidays can be found on the relevant page of this brochure and the associated holiday itinerary, downloadable from our website.
