165 msafiri Markus Curschellas started as an air traffic apprentice with Swissair at Basle Airport in 1978, where he acquired experience in all fields of ground handling, cargo and sales. This was followed by a one- year posting to London Heathrow in 1981, after which he worked in various capacities at Zurich airport and then as a station manager at a number of Swissair outstations. In 1993 he was promoted to manager of ramp handling and load control at Zurich airport, handling some two hundred arrivals and departures daily. In 1997, Markus joined Swissport, the new ground- handling company that had emerged from the former Swissair ground services, working as a director with responsibility for Terminal B operations at Zurich airport, offering the full ground-handling package to some fifty airlines. At the end of 2001, he left Swissport to join the newly founded Swiss International Airlines as vice- president of ground services, where he took over the task of building up ground services from scratch, including setting up some 120 outstations. He joined Kenya Airways in February 2007 and is now responsibile for ground services operations across the network, including cargo. As well as being involved in many pioneering ground- handling projects, Markus has also acquired extensive business administration knowledge, and has attended numerous management courses, mainly at the Swiss University City, St. Gallen. Bram Steller, a Dutch national, joined Kenya Airways in August 2008 to fill the newly created position of chief operating officer. He holds a bachelor's degree in electronic engineering and a graduate MBA. Bram began his career as a management consultant at KLM's head office in Amsterdam in 1973, where his jobs included advising Surinam Airways following that country's independence. From 1975 until 1999 Bram held various commercial and operational managerial jobs with KLM, being posted in a range of overseas positions across Europe, Africa, America and the Gulf, including Lagos, Cairo, Stockholm, Minneapolis and Dubai. After his KLM career he worked with Kenya Airways from 2000 to 2001 as commercial director, and then with Jet Airways in India as executive vice- president commercial ( 2002– 03). He subsequently worked as managing director of Trans Maldivian Airways ( 2003– 08), changing a break- even operation into a highly profitable company which even managed to survive the Asian tsunami with its full service intact. He subsequently returned to Kenya Airways to look after operations, with the emphasis on improving the reliability, punctuality and performance of Africa's prime hub carrier. was a member of a team of World Bank- sponsored Kenyan technocrats, known as the Dream Team, which was engaged by President Moi to turn around the Kenyan economy. In this capacity Titus served as permanent secretary to the Ministry of Information, Transport and Communications, and was also a member of the board of Kenya Airways. He returned to Magadi Soda Company in April 2001, where he continued to serve as managing director until his present appointment with Kenya Airways in February 2003. Titus Naikuni has extensive boardroom experience, having served on various company boards including as a member of the board of Brunner Mond ( South Africa), as chairman of the Kenya Power & Lighting Company, and as chairman of the Housing Finance Company. He is currently a board member of Maersk Kenya, CFC Bank Kenya, deputy chairman of Magadi Soda Company, chairman of the Kenya Film Corporation, a member of the Unilever Africa Advisory Council, and also a trustee of Mpala Wildlife Foundation in Nanyuki, Kenya. As head of IT at Bamburi Cement, Kevin was instrumental in strategy formulation, shifting the group to an end- user computing environment, integrating ERP systems and putting a complete IT organisation in place. Kevin was subsequently appointed to the newly created position of IT director at Housing Finance, where he oversaw similar planning and implementation activities for banking business systems. In 2001, the Computer Society of Kenya awarded him the Chairman's Achievement Award in recognition of his work. 166 msafiri SAFARI NJEMA Allan Fullilove began an engineering apprenticeship with British Airways in 1978 and spent over 13 years with that company, acquiring considerable experience in all aspects of aircraft maintenance, including planning, technical support and heavy- and line- maintenance. After leaving British Airways, Allan worked first for British Midland as hangar foreman, then with KLM UK as line- maintenance manager and then as head of base maintenance, introducing change management processes and engineering development ideas. His next position was as head of aircraft maintenance in the UK with Monarch Aircraft, looking after seven major maintenance lines generating 400,000 man- hours per year, and also covering third- party aircraft. He looked after worldwide line stations and introduced effective production planning ideas with cross- functional team- working and change management ideas. Allan is a holder of UK CAA licences in all disciplines of aircraft maintenance and holds a vast number of aircraft and engine- type approvals for the large array of aircraft he has worked or managed – everything from the smallest Fokker 50 to the largest Boeing 747. ALLAN FULLILOVE Age 47 Joined KQ 2007 Job TECHNICAL DIRECTOR Captain Paul K Mwangi is an alumnus of Alliance High School and a firm believer in the school's motto, " strong to serve". He joined Kenya Airways in 1984 at the age of 25, initially as a cadet officer and then as a co- pilot. During his extensive flying career, he has flown a wide range of aircraft including Fokker 27s and 50s, Boeing 737s, Airbuses, and now the Boeing 767. He also works as an instructor and examiner for the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and is a part- time lecturer in airline operations for the Moi University MBA Program. He joined Kenya Airways management in 1998 as manager of quality systems and standards, and has subsequently served in diverse roles, including fleet manager for the Airbus A310- 300, head of fleets management and head of operations control centre. He is currently director of flight operations, responsible for the training and operations of crew ( pilots and cabin crew), the operations control centre and also for in- flight management. In addition to obtaining his Airport Transport Licence ( ATPL) at Oxford in the UK, Captain Mwangi also holds an MSc degree in Air Transport Management from the City University in London, and has complemented his training with IATA Diplomas in Airline Operations and Airline Strategic Management in Geneva.
