168 msafiri SAFARI NJEMA Paul Matata Kasimu years holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics and sociology from the University of Nairobi, a master's degree in business administration, and a postgraduate diploma in general management from Cambridge University. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious COYA Manager of the Year award. Paul has over 17 years' human resources experience across Africa and the UK. He began his career in 1989 as a management analyst with the Directorate of Personnel Management, Office of the President. In 1992 he joined Barclays Bank of Kenya as manpower planning and development officer, and subsequenty worked for Barclays in various other capacities including HR change programme manager and head of human resources for Barclays Southern Africa, in which role he was responsible for the effective running of Barclays human resources in Botswana, Mauritius, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In 2003 he worked as HR business partner, Barclays Bank Africa, in the London office, where he provided HR consultancy services to Barclays Africa finance and service delivery directors, supporting business strategies cutting across eleven African businesses. From 2004 to 2006, Paul served as regional HR business partner, Barclays Bank East Africa. He joined Kenya Airways in January 2006. Richard Nuttall holds a master's degree in Mathematics from Oxford University and a Sloan Master's degree from the London Business School. He has 18 years' airline and transport industry experience spanning multiple roles and geographies. He joined the Swire Group in 1987. After a year in Australia as a trainee with Transwest Haulage, he then spent the next 11 years with Cathay Pacific Airways in various positions including airline planning, revenue management, internal consultancy and country management. In 1999 he left to join Philippine Airlines as senior commercial advisor, one of a small team successfully tasked with rescuing the airline from receivership and restoring it to profitability. More recently, from 2003 to 2007, Richard was based in Los Angeles with Polar Air Cargo as vice- president sales and marketing for the Americas. He joined Kenya Airways in June 2008. In addition to developing and implementing commercial strategies for various organizations, Richard has vast experience in turnaround management and organizational and cultural transformation. Alex Wainana Mbugua is an MBA graduate specialising in corporate finance and investment banking, and is also a certified public secretary, a certified public accountant, and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya. He has previously held board positions at AngloGold Holdings and Bain Hogg and Norfolk Holdings. Alex began his career as an audit consultant with KPMG, Kenya ( 1985– 89), and subsequently worked as financial consultant to the International Air Transport Association ( 1990– 91), chief financial officer of Express Kenya ( 1992– 97) and finance and administration director of Bain Hogg Insurance Brokers, Kenya ( 1997– 99). Between 2000 to 2003, Alex was CEO of Combined Systems Group, Africa Division, a wholly- owned subsidiary of PricewaterhouseCoopers, South Africa. Since 2003, Alex Mbugua has been the chief finance officer of AngloGold Ashanti's Africa Open Pit Mine operations in South Africa. He was appointed group finance director of Kenya Airways in July 2008.
