HAVE BOOKS, WILL FLY Boeing and Kenya Airways took advantage of the delivery of a new Next- Generation Boeing 737- 800 in August 2008 to transport a shipment of 111 boxes of law textbooks to Nairobi. The books were donated by APPEAL ( Academics Promoting the Pedagogy of Effective Advocacy in Law), a group of US- based legal professors, with the help of 25 law schools across the USA. After arriving in Nairobi, the books were distributed in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia. Boeing and Kenya Airways handled the logistical details of transporting the books free of charge. " It's very generous of Kenya Airways to add thousands of pounds of weight to its airplane," said APPEAL board member Professor Anne Enquist, " and we're grateful to Boeing for co-ordinating logistics." Boeing and KQ have worked together on several projects, including The Pride Centre, a training/ leadership facility. 172 msafiri SAFARI NJEMA Proof that the organic food revolution which is sweeping the globe has firmly arrived in Kenya is provided by the example of the trail- blazing Kenyan company, Green Dreams. Originally based at a small farm in Tigoni, just outside Nairobi, Green Dreams became Kenya's first certified organic supplier in 2005, and is now leading the country's organic revolution, launching an ' Organic Box Scheme' to deliver produce to consumers around Nairobi and opening two stores in the capital, which sell organic produce from across Kenya. They have also helped set up a programme offering subsidised organic certification, training and marketing to hundreds of small- scale Kenyan farmers, who are then paid a premium for their increasingly sought- after products. One particularly striking success story has been the Kibera Youth Reform Group, an association of young people living in Africa's second- largest slum, Kibera, in Nairobi. Green Dreams donated used irrigation equipment recycled from their original farm in Tigoni and provided the group with training. The results were spectacular: in under four months the group had transformed a local garbage dumping site into a stunning vegetable garden, and are currently making a tidy income out of their produce. At Kenya Airways we are aware that our customers prefer to eat fresh, organic food when available and we are always striving to improve our menus and the food served on board. We are proud to be able to offer delicious fresh organic salads on our flights. KENYA'S ORGANIC REVOLUTION The clinic is centrally located in Nairobi; opening hours are 9am– 1pm and 2– 6pm from Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 2pm on weekends and public holidays. New KQ health clinic opens The Kenya Airways International Life House Clinic, which has been operational since June 2008, has now been formally opened. The new facilities, which were refurbished at a cost of Ksh15 million, will provide extensive care for KQ staff, offering consultants' clinics in gynaecology, paediatrics, dermatology, nutrition and weight management. The clinic will also play an important role in KQ's medical clearance service for passengers, which provides assistance to people with special medical needs and helps determine passengers' fitness to travel.
