The lobby is dominated by smooth curves and a debonair combination of russet brown and sapphire blue, while the rooms – similarly attired – are unusually large for this high- density part of Hong Kong, starting at 45 square metres. The building itself doesn't protrude from Central district's concrete jungle when viewed from the street, but head up to the two-storey restaurant and bar on the 29th and 30th floor to be wowed by a spectacular urban vista. The style is pure sci- fi. There's fingerprint access to lifts and rooms, tablet PCs with which to check- in, TVs built into the shower, and a computer system which monitors guests' lighting, temperature and music preferences. Wireless can be taken as given, of course. Mingle Place has a quiet, backstreet location, but is only a few steps from Knutsford Terrace, the most essential nightlife hub in this part of Hong Kong. Solo travellers will appreciate the dedicated single rooms – and the ( relatively) cheap tariffs. Down the street from Guangzhou East Railway Station – terminus of the high- speed shuttle to Hong Kong – across the road from the landmark CITIC Plaza, home to the majority of the city's Fortune 500 companies, the Westin was the first big western brand to move into this corner of Guangzhou. The interior comforts are highly polished: oversized guest rooms, great restaurants ( particularly the top- floor Italian) and superb views of the affluent, high- rise studded Tianhe district.
