On this holiday you’ll certainly get the most out of this beautiful corner of England. East Sussex offers diverse walking terrain from gentle walking along the coast and the Pevensey Levels, to the rolling hill country landscapes of the Weald and South Downs. An impressive 63% of the 700 square miles of East Sussex have been designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and six miles of the coastline have been designated Heritage Coast. From Herstmonceux, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, we can make our way through the beautiful Sussex countryside, passing the remote village of Wartling and then following the coastline back to Cooden via some lovely sandy beaches. We may begin several walks in the famous town of Battle, where an Abbey built by William the Conqueror is located. One of these walks is a part of the 1066 walk, a route following that of the Norman army after landing at Pevensey. A walk from Guestling Green wends its way to the coast, where we can continue along cliff-tops and coastal paths, finishing at Hastings Harbour. A highlight of this holiday would also be the walk from the ancient hillside carving of the ‘Long Man of Wilmington’ to Beachy Head, with spectacular cliff-top panoramas. Only 23 miles from west to east and 13 miles north to south and just a few miles off the Hampshire coast, this is island paradise a world away from the bustle of mainland life. Since Victorian times, the small fishing town of Ventnor has been known as the ‘Madeira of England’ thanks to its exceptionally mild and sunny climate. It’s a beautiful and appealing base from which to explore the smallest of England’s counties. Over half of the Isle of Wight is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and with a staggering 500 miles of marked paths the island is ideal for exploration on foot. We’ll discover the coastal and woodland paths, high downs, quiet lanes and thatched villages, wonderful beaches and spectacular cliff shorelines. The island’s backbone, a high chalk ridge straddling the island from Culver Cliffs in the east to The Needles in the west, allows us to reach the island’s high points. We’ll walk low-lying coastal routes along with high cliff walks around the 67 miles of dramatic coastline. This is a holiday for the walker, naturalist, photographer, geologist – and anyone simply seeking the tranquillity and beauty of island life on one of England’s most accessible natural highlights.
