Americas – Ecuador ECUADOR86 A journey to the Avenue of the Volcanoes, Spanish Colonial cities and the world's most exceptional wildlife reserve. Two weeks or 19 days* – half board The unique combination of Ecuador's dramatic history and scenic and cultural variety make it a colourful and exhilarating destination to explore. Combined with a three- day cruise around and a two- night stay on the Galápagos Islands, our holiday offers the best of this diverse country. Bordered by Peru and Colombia, mainland Ecuador is divided from North to South by the Andes into the coastal plains, majestic mountains with their snowcapped volcanoes and humid rainforests of the Amazon basin. Flying into Quito, we walk the colonial centre, and visit La Mitad del Mundo, the site where the location of the equator was measured. From Quito we continue north to Otovalo to visit the Indian market and also walk in the beautiful country around Laguna Cuicocha. Heading south again we walk in the Pasochoa Andean shrub forest and visit the Cotopaxi National Park to walk on the highest active volcano in the world. From Alausi we hope to take the train down the ' Devil's Nose', El Nariz del Diablo. In colonial Cuenca we take a walking tour of the old town and a hike amongst lakes and ponds of the Cajas National Park before descending to the warmth of coastal Guayaquil. Look out for the iguanas in the city square. From Guayaquil we fly out to join our three- night Galápagos cruise. We'll sail amongst these isolated volcanic islands, each of them a separate world, and experience the character and diversity of wildlife in this unique biological haven. We spend two nights on the Galápagos island of Santa Cruz and walk the paths through arid vegetation. A fitting end to a stunning experience.
