Attimesitmaybe dustyortiringbutwehavethesatisfactionofhavingseen thebeautyofAfricaourway. Wehavedriventheroadsand experiencedthedelightsofremoterAfrica, itisdefinitely worthafewminorhardshipstogettothesoulofAfrica. EveryjourneyweallmakeinAfricaisuniqueandIamvery luckytohaveexperiencedanAfricathatisonlyaccessible toafewpeoplewhoarepreparedtotakeanadventureand reapthejoysthatarehere: themistymornings, the surprisegamesightings, theunexpectedencounterswith localpeopleintheirdailylives. Howitallstarted In1992wesetofftoretrieveoneofCharles'LandRoversfromKarno, NorthNigeria, whereithadbeenmaroonedduringanexpedition Charleshadputtogether. Theplanwastodriveitsouthandshipitback totheUKfromCapeTown. DuringthejourneythroughthegutsofAfricawekeptmeetingtourists whowantedtoknowwherewehadgotitfrom, whereweweregoingand commentedonwhatawonderfulwaytoseeAfrica. Itwasthenthatwe hadthefirstinklingofanidea, andaswedroveweformedtheplanfor theveryfirstfullyinclusiveselfdrivesafaricompany. WerefurbishedtheLandRover, equippingittoaveryhighstandard, thensetupbasesinVictoriaFalls, MaunandWindhoek, beforecoming backtoEnglandtomarkettheidea. SafariDrivewassetupinearly1993andweranourfirstselfdrive safariinApriloutofVictoriaFalls. Althougholdhacksofthesafariindustrywereveryscathing, sayingthat we'dneverbeabletostayinbusiness, after15yearswefeelwehave provedthemwrong, thoughwenowrunlow- mileageLandRovers– not likethewonderfuloldoriginalonethathadbeentoKathmandu andback. Sadlywehadtosellitandweliketothinkitmaystillbe somewhereinAfrica. 5
