The mysterious continent Up until the beginning of the 19th century, Africa was uncharted territory. Since that period, explorers have returned time and again to the African interior in the hope of unlocking the secrets of this incredible continent. Famous names, such as Livingstone and Stanley, are synonymous with the Victorian era of exploration and discovery. To them, Africa was a fascinating and mystifying place full of extraordinary peoples and weird and wonderful flora and fauna. People spoke of the ‘mysterious’ or ’dark’ continent and to many, Africa was a wild and dangerous fantasy land.
