The South Western Township was created during the apartheid era and now many people choose to live there – some 3- 5 million people inhabit Soweto. Most of the population are middle income earners, living in small box shaped brick houses. Only 10% of the population live in poverty but in contrast Soweto also has the highest concentration of millionaires in the country. On the tour you will visit a shantytown. The shacks have electricity, there is running water and the council even collects rubbish once a week! You will talk to the locals and may be invited into their homes or schools. You will see Barragwanath Hospital ( the largest in the world), the local market and the largest taxi rank in Africa. The Hector Pieterson Museum was established to preserve the his-tory and the memory of all those who were involved in the Soweto uprising of 16 June 1976. Soweto has the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize Winner's live. Nelson Mandela's house is now a Museum, but Desmund Tutu still lives there. Learn much more about the history and what it is really like to live in Soweto ( past and present) from our guides. The tour can be booked on arrival in Johannesburg. We visit the picturesque " Malay Quarter", a dynamic, living museum and home to the oldest mosque in the southern hemisphere. We discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community. As a result of the Group Areas Act, 60 000 Capetonian families were forcibly removed from District Six between 1966 and 1982. We examine the now desolate area, and visit the living museum which attempts to represent and recapture District Six in various ways. Seeking racial segregation, apartheid policies disrupted all non- white population groups and distorted both rural and urban development. Sprawling camps of seemingly endless shanties - makeshift struc-tures of various materials - provide little more than a roof and some shelter. As we shall see, squatter settlements are seeking their own solutions as an economic necessity. Against all odds, township life prevails, in all its nuances. As hosts of local community workers, we take a walk through a vibrant black community with all its different social strata. Langa is Cape Town's oldest formal black township. You will have the opportunity to talk to people and try the tradi-tional African sorghum beer at a township tavern (" shebeen"). We witness the work in progress as hundreds of squatters, with the help of state grants, are setting about building their own brick homes.
