Isn't it comforting to know that Spring is 'just around the corner'. After such a cold winter, rising energy prices, the VAT increase and petrol now at an alarming record high, don't you feel like really getting away from it all? Many years ago a Nepalese friend took me to his favourite place, a small hill just outside of Kathmandu. Peaceful, yet still close enough to hear the constant honking of car horns and sense the frenetic nature of the city. I asked why he thought that 'getting away from it all' was so important. His reply in an instant was "up here everything makes sense, it's down below that doesn't make sense". I think he's right. It's not just getting away, it's the getting away from it all we need to be able to recharge, revitalise and return afresh. Of course a walking holiday is a far cry from sharing a beach with thousands of others, but as walking holidays have become increasingly popular so the household name treks and walking routes get busier and busier. Getting away from it all is seemingly becoming difficult. So, to make getting away from it all easier for you I've selected our ten best alternative trekking adventures and walking holidays. All encompass the expected and anticipated highlights of their particular destination, but all have that getting away from it all edge to them too. I hope they provide you with inspiration for your next great escape. Now, here's a real piece of exciting and ground breaking news. Literally just 15 minutes before I sat down to write this piece, I was discussing what
will be a world exclusive for Walks Worldwide. For August of this year we have special permission to trek into and stay in a hidden valley and wildlife haven of the spectacular High Tatras of Slovakia. Here in the company of a park ranger we'll be walking with bears! From a safe distance of course, but with just us and the bears, how about that for getting away from it all? We'll only be allowed to take 8 people and I'll put full details on www.walksworldwide.com just as soon as I can. If you can't wait, then drop me a line at mark.knowles@walksworldwide.com and I'll send you all the information before it's published.Mark Knowles, Product Manager, Walks WorldwideNepal - Poon Hill

. Follow trails known
only to the Bedouin
. Camp beneath the
desert starsOur very special trekking adventure across the deserts and mountains of Jordan to the truly magnificent site of ancient, iconic Petra is unique in many ways. As you walk through the dramatic gorges and canyons of the Dana Mountains on trails best known only to the nomadic Bedouin, it's highly unlikely you'll encounter any other trekkers. A painstaking amount of time was spent with the Bedouin in researching and creating this most special and unique route to Petra. With the intelligent use of 4WD drive vehicles, wonderful nights spent camping in wild tranquillity beneath the stars can be fully supported and in true Bedouin style along with local cooks providing amazing food in splendid isolation. Waking each morning to the aroma of freshly cooked bread at camp is almost worth it alone! You'll be trekking through the most exciting and rugged landscapes in Jordan starting in the famous Dana Nature Reserve and crossing the classic rocky 'hamada' desert to climb into the spectacular mountains and escarpments above the Great Rift Valley. Spectacular trails lead through Wadis and along rocky ledges to emerge at the "back door" of Petra itself. After exploring the 'rose-red' city of Petra, it's time to explore some breathtaking desert scenery at Wadi Rum, renowned for its arched rock bridges, dunes, canyons and beautiful sunsets. A perfect climax to a superb voyage of discovery through the dramatic landscapes of the Bedouin. It's no surprise that this adventure is fast becoming known as "The Inca Trail of the Middle East", yet with our very special route to Petra you'll certainly feel "off the beaten track".Dates and prices:28 Mar 11 - 06 Apr 11
