POSITION Olweendo Planning a self- drive trip to Namibia can be overwhelming. There is a lot to chose from, and it can be hard to judge distances. We asked self-drive experts ATI to draw up a relaxing itinerary for a fortnight- long trip. 60 Travel Namibia Itineraries DAY 1 ELEGANT GUEST HOUSE, WINDHOEK Relaxing day in the capital after your overnight fl ight. DAYS 2, 3 & 4 ZEBRA RIVER LODGE IN THE TSARISBERGE MOUNTAINS Drive south to Zebra River Lodge, where you stay for three days. You can walk through the mountains or drive to the spring pools in this private concession area. DAYS 5 & 6 DESERT HOMESTEAD, NEAR SESRIEM A ninety- minute drive takes you to Desert Homestead. From here you can explore the dunes of Sossusvlei, and go horse riding. DAYS 7 & 8 SANDFIELDS GUEST HOUSE, SWAKOPMUND Drive to the coastal town of Swakopmund with its historic buildings, well-maintained gardens, coffee bars, and great seafood restaurants. There are many adventure activities on offer including sand boarding, tandem parachuting, fi shing, and quad biking. DAY 9 CAMP KIPWE, DAMARALAND A morning drive to Damaraland. Here you will stay at Camp Kipwe, a beautiful lodge tucked away in the huge boulders that characterise this desert scenery. Nature drives to see the mountain zebra and the desert elephants are on offer. The rock etchings of Twyfelfontein are close by. DAYS 10 & 11 GROOTBERG LODGE, NORTHERN DAMARALAND Perched on the lip of the Grootberg Plateau, with a view down the Klip River Valley, lies the newly- developed Driving Grootberg Lodge. This benchmark project draws the local # Khoadi// Hoas community into the tourism industry. Desert elephant, rhino and even lion all live within this 12,000 hectare concession area. DAYS 12 & 13 OKAUKUEJO REST CAMP, WATERHOLE CHALET, ETOSHA. Today you drive into Etosha National Park. You can spend the evening relaxing with a drink at one of the seats overlooking the fl oodlit waterhole - one of the best in Africa. During the day you can drive through the park, stopping at any of the numerous waterholes, hoping to spot lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, giraffe and zebra. There are also large herds of antelope and many fascinating bird species. DAY 14 OKONJIMA MAIN CAMP Okonjima is home to the Africat Foundation, which works with farmers and the public to conserve the big cat species of Namibia. Activities here include lion viewing, nature trails, cheetah and leopard tracking, and Bushman walks. After dinner you will also be offered the opportunity to visit a night hide where many nocturnal animals, including porcupine, honey badger, and leopard are frequently sighted. Accommodation at the Main Camp is in luxurious rooms which are located in the main farmhouse, surrounded by lush gardens.
