For further tour information go to: www. trekamerica. com Departs AAAAAA Trek Code: XXX Departs AAAAAA Trek Code: XXX STARTFINISHSTARTFINISH 20102010 18 Let's start off where it all began in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the founding fathers first set foot in 1620. From there you've got the historical cities of Boston, New York City and Philadelphia. Then there's Chicago and Washington DC, also among some of the oldest cities in The States. but if you want the oldest continually inhabited city in North America you have to go south all the way to St Augustine, Florida, settled by the Spanish in 1565. But old is relative when you're talking history, because a lot has happened in The States during the last few hundred years. Slavery has come and gone; there's been a Civil War, a few Olympic Games and World's Fairs and a whole lot of monuments and memorials have been built in honour of all the good ( and sometimes bad) things that Yanks have done over the years. So even if you're not a history buff, or all that bothered about the past, there's still a lot to sink your teeth into. Who says America is lacking ' culture'? Tell that to the New York cabbie or the Cherokee Indian, the Appalachian hillbilly or the 6th generation Cajun working the bayous of the Mississippi Delta. There may not be culture as in royal families and ' lost tribes', but they don't call America ' the melting pot' for nothing. There are world class universities ( and the party cultures that follow!), museums, art galleries, theatre, music, restaurants and shopping. You want it, it's there. Then there's pop- culture; which The States can claim to own for the last 100 years or so. We're talking Time Square, professional sports teams like the Yankees and the Chicago Bulls, Coca Cola, McDonalds, Disneyworld, MTV and music like jazz, country, honky- tonk and the Blues. America's Eastern states are an eclectic mix of old and new, all coming together to create a great big melting pot of just about anything and everything you can imagine. In The States, ' the East' is everything to the right of the Mississippi River, so we're talking BIG! Over 2,000 km from New York to New Orleans, then from the Great Lakes south to the tropical Florida Keys; the East means something different to everyone, both old and new. To some it's Boston, Broadway, basketball and the blues, to others its history, hillbillies, Harlem and hot Georgia nights. What's the East mean to you? We call it history... and culture!
