Red Nose Day is organised by UK-based charity Comic Relief, whose mission is ' positive change through the power of entertainment'. Well- known entertainers and personalities help raise funds for development projects around the world. Projects in Zambia include the following: Action Against Hunger This project supports people living with HIV, and their relatives, by lobbying for access to medical treatment and drugs. It also offers training and support so they can better feed themselves and family members who are too ill to work. Spend: £ 484,100 CODA International Training This project works to promote a better understanding of women's rights in Zambian law, and to equip the police and local authorities to respond appropriately in cases of discrimination or violence against women. Spend: £ 467,986 Target Tuberculosis TB is the primary cause of AIDS- related deaths, yet it is treatable if caught in time. This project works to help poor people receive early diagnosis and treatment. It also provides medicine, food and emotional support at home, and education about TB for the community. Spend: £ 329,800 Twin Many farmers in Africa stay trapped in poverty because they do not get a fair price for what they grow. This project supports nut farmers - particularly vulnerable to low prices - to get a better deal, by setting up a company that gives them greater ownership and where profi ts are ploughed back into the community. Spend: £ 247,600 Action on Disability and Development This project supports the work of disabled people's organisations; it also lobbies government to improve the provision of accessible health care, education and other services to disabled people. It uses the media and other avenues to challenge the stigma and discrimination that often affect disabled people. Spend: £ 750,000 Homeless International Urban slum dwellers in Zambia face overcrowding, forced evictions and poor living conditions. This project supports slum dwellers to organise themselves into small savings groups and then work with government in order to get loans to build their own houses. Spend: £ 500,000 Royal Zambezi Lodge is a striking combination of contemporary style and comfort and is a perfect base to explore the unspoilt African environment of the Lower Zambezi. The fourteen chalets are designed in an elegant tented style, under thatched roofs, to take full advantage of the natural beauty of Zambia.
